What Do You Do with Your Old Electronics?

It seems people on OzBargain are frequently buying the latest TV, or gadget.

What do you do with your old gear?

If selling, what’s the best approach?

Depends what it is. Give it away, stick it on eBay/gumtree, put it in the garage because "you never know when it might come I handy", then throw it out 2 years later.

If its too old like a CRT TV (who would want that!), have it picked up during council large item collection day.

Actually, CRT TVs work well with old video game consoles.

      • It did back in the day, break your back lifting it 😢

Or go scout out peoples’ front lawn at council clean up week and sell on gumtree ? 😁

  • I post it on Facebook Marketplace for free then leftovers go in the council collection.

If I'm upgrading, it's normally because the old one's not functioning. Otherwise they normally go to other rooms (in the case of something like a TV) or family (headphones/phones etc). It has a cascade effect - New TV in the main room, that TV moved to the bedroom, That TV moved to the guest room.

In the end, the last down the line wouldn't get much if I tried to sell it so it goes to the local tip that has an electrical recycle program.

I have a shed full of a variety of PC parts, broken tools and electricals, random hoses and cabling etc.

I am quite judicious about sorting the actual rubbish (like an inkjet printer) from upcyclable components (like a dishwasher pump). About 80% of the items in the shed will eventually get repurposed in one project or another. I built my kids an electric go-kart using two old 12v drills!

…I should probably purge some 12v transformers though. Really don't need 30+ of them

    • You MacGyver 👍

  • I normally try to fix it first. It's fun
Normally messes it up enough for me to not feel guilty about throwing them out.

Granted never did it with anything big though.

  • I get a lot of excess computer equipment and often reuse some myself or refurb others to sell. There's good profit reselling if the price is right :)

Store in shed for 30 years then sell as 'vintage' for more than what I originally paid.

  • Fridge, TV, consoles…

Those things go to beach house, gym and man cave. In that priority.

  • Selling it for higher than purchase price, use that extra cash towards the next one.

  • Give it away to friends, sell it on Fartbook or Scumtree. A lot of things I throw in a box in a back room cupboard and get it out 10 years later just to compare technology… still have an iPhone 4 floating around here somewhere…

  • I take all my old electronics and dump them in the Bunnings collection bins. No idea what they do with it afterwards.

It's a good idea to remove all lithium batteries from your devices first. Don't want one getting crushed in the bin and causing a fire.

    • and how would you dispose of the batteries?

I usually melt them down and harvest the rare metals.

  • Repurpose them or strip their parts to build new things.
Recently repurposed an old reverse camera and turned into a dash cam.
Also been wall mounting phones and iPads as Smart Home Hub Controllers.

  • Local recycling.
