I have some friends with the Sunbeam, it's kind of like ice-cream russian roulette; personally I wouldn't bother with one. Despite what you think with summer approaching, it will soon be the most under-used appliance in your kitchen! :p

If you really have your heart set on this type of device though, I'd pony up the extra few bucks & go for the Cuisinart model, this mob seems cheaper than ebay ATM & apparently has free shipping:

  • The Cuisinart is worth the money. Not as great as one of those industrial ones:P

  • I doubt the Cuisinart is going to do much better than the Sunbeam.
I have the sunbeam and it does an OK job at making Home-made icecream but it doesn't whip, nor do I expect that the Cuisinart will.
Commercial ice cream is whipped while being frozen, that's why it's sold by the litre, not by the Kg. 2 litres will typically be less than 1Kg (cheaper ice-creams generally have more air and are lighter - hence they can be sold cheaper!)
The Sunbeam (and I'm betting the Cuisinart) mix, not whip, so you don't get any over-run (industry term for whip) and therefore you get a solid ice-cream rather than a light, fluffy one.
For a whipping style unit, capable of producing around 2L you need ~$5000 and a space the size of a bar fridge!

    • I was somewhat underwhelmed by the inconsistency of the Sunbeam. No two batches of the same recipe ever seemed to come out the same!

Going purely on reviews (because I did consider one of these myself at one time), the Cuisinart is more reliable both in terms of performance & longevity than the Sunbeam.

  • Currently I use frozen berries, vanilla yogurt and a Baton mixer. If I get the levels right, it just makes a soft (sometimes too soft) ice-cream. So anything is an improvement.

What I also saw a Panasonic mixer, where you put the whole thing in the freezer withthe ingredients in the bowl, and it stirs the ingredients, while the freezer cooles the whole thing down. That would be good enough for me, but cannot find any place who sells it.
