Current Telstra member wanting to take advantage of JB port-in deals

I'm looking at going for that new S20 FE JB port-in deal ($299 upfront + $69 p/month over 12 months) and I'm currently out of contract on Telstra and want to keep my old number on this new plan.
I'm aware to take advantage of those deals you need to be ported out for a minimum of 30 days to port back in however I've heard of some people starting a new contract, cancelling their old contract and using your old number on the new contract after signing up. Can anyone confirm this and what steps you took to do this?

Cheers.

  • I too, am interested about this.

Yeah, I did it with the $55 port-in plan in June for the $400 voucher. Just asked to setup a brand new number instead of porting-in which they were happy to honour the deal for, then after it was setup just rang Telstra, asked to cancel my old service while moving the number to the new contract one, and done.

    • That's great to hear. Will try and do it and worst case if it doesn't work, I'll just have to inform everyone of my new number haha!
      Thank you.

The method to which you are referring is fraught with risk. Telstra are under no obligation to migrate your number to the new service, although are often happy to do so. The problem is that this is directly and deliberately subverting the restrictions on the deal, since it's designed to add an extra service to Telstra's total number, not just adding one and then removing another. I suspect the only reason why people get away with this is because of a disconnect between the JB HiFi Telstra team and the general Telstra team. If Telstra were offering the credit, themselves, then this loophole would almost certainly not exist.

In saying that, you should be able to get away with it. Just ensure that you're happy with the possibility of something going wrong, which would mean either losing your existing number, or needing to pay for two concurrent plans in order to keep your old number if you cannot afford to lose it.

    • Agree.. also, when you disconnect a service, the number goes into quarantine for 6 months. This is in case there’s been fraud or something. To get the number back, the agent needs to override the quarantine and not every agent has that access level

    • What if you then ported the original number to another service provider. Could you then port it back in and have it applied to the new service? Or would you be better off trying another agent?

      • I know that the systems some other telcos use (or used to use) would allow you to action a port even months after activation, but that was more of a case where the system allows it to happen, but you’re still not supposed to do it.

Telstra might have the same capacity, but also might not. Someone else should be able to answer this.

      • Yes, you can port out your current Telstra number to another service provider. You would need to wait at least 1 month before you can port it back to Telstra and be elegible for this port in offer from JB Hi-Fi. Depending on who serves you, they may or may not care about the 1 month period.

  • So does anyone have any recent experience with porting out from Telstra to Optus/Vodafone and then trying to take advantage of a JB Hifi deal a few days later (or same day/next day)?

    • I don't believe that will work as one of the T&Cs of this is that you need to be ported out for a minimum of 30 days
