[Switch] This Strange Realm of Mine - $1.99 (Was $19.99, 90% off) @ Nintendo eShop

HEAR ME OUT

do not judge this game by it's cover or lack of metacritic score. All the reviews I've managed to find are very positive, as is the reception on Steam.

I'm currently a few hours in and am very engrossed in the concept.

In terms of gameplay it plays like if Doom were a story driven game about philosophy and spirituality (some direct and many indirect references to the teachings of Eckhart Tolle) and also looked like Minecraft at times. It works.

Here's the eshop write-up:

Embark on a journey for answers to who you really are.
This Strange Realm Of Mine is a First Person Shooter mixed with Poetry and Psychological Horror.

In REALM you explore your afterlife. On your quest you'll find characters in different situations, with their problems and thoughts on life. You can invite them to your tavern, a safe-haven in the midst of all the chaos. You'll also meet Ulrich, a spiritual guide who'll take you through your experience as a lost soul.

You'll come across monstrous beings who are eager to put their teeth in you. There are several ways to rid yourself of them, ranging from guns to melee weapons. Be ready to get your hands dirty and watch the blood drip slowly from the roof and walls.

For $2, I'll keep my expectations reasonable 👍

  • Had enough gold coins to just buy it, so easy decision.

I will give you an up-vote for your enthusiasm…so sick of these Pixel looking games though. Not my cup of tea. Its 2020 not 1990

    • This game is 3D and meant to look like Doom with clear inspiration from Minecraft. Definitely a passion project. A solo developer game as well. Usually with games like this, pushing "good graphics" is time and money consuming which are commodities these small teams don't have.

I get that some people may judge it purely based on the aesthetic, but it's an experience definitely more than the sum of its visual parts

But I dunno. May not make everyone happy

Well explained and I like that unlike most here you didn't just attack my comment :) For $2 its a no brainer though, if you enjoy these games. I'm sure many enjoy the nostalgia. Also good to support small developers so we continue to get unique and diverse games.
