Couches that fold out to beds

I'm moving into a new place and the old couches are getting a bit uncomfortable and worn so it seems like a good time to get some new seating.

I'm in Perth. I can organise my own pick up, but delivery would be preferred.

Comfort is very important which means the cushioning should be soft (not so hard you can tell they're simply foam bats stuffed into a thin bit of fabric, but not so insanely soft that you have to shuffle forward in the seat significantly to get yourself up). The arms should be well padded and rounded enough to lean on, either with an arm or by putting your back on it without getting a bit of hard frame jammed somewhere uncomfortable.

The space is about 5x5m (it's shared with a dining area, so lengthwise you could steal an extra metre or two from the dining area if it were needed).

I like the idea of a corner style sofa and think it'd work with the space, but since I also want them to double as sofa-beds that's probably not practical and incredibly hard to find and expensive.

I guess the exact type of couch probably doesn't matter (ask if more detail's needed) - where's cheap and good in Perth?

  • Before you buy one, make sure you have a good sit in it. I've never come accross a sofa bed that was comfortable to sit on - the frame at the back always seems to dig in.

  • Futons are usually better, in my view

  • I have this one from Ikea which is really comfortable and takes 10 seconds to fold into a bed - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S89874376/

The good thing is that you can wash/change the covers if one of your dodgey mates soils himself. Or you can change the colour of the cover if you redecorate.

I think they deliver for around $30

  • I like the look of those IKEA ones, but I'm not a fan of the arm-less design. It makes them far less useful as couches. The expensive ($1K+) IKEA ones might do the job, but they're expensive. A similar problem crops with futon ones - expensive and uncomfortable wood or simply missing arms.

I will most certainly be sitting in, lazing on, maybe even having a go at lightly napping on whatever I end up buying before I buy it.

  • So… cheap but not crap furniture places in Perth?
