Recommendations on Buying a Refrigerator (600L Budget $1500)

Hello OzBargainers.

I am looking to buy a refrigerator. Around 450 to 600 L. Price bracket $800 to $1500. Just wanted to know if anyone here knows from where should I buy and how can I save money most on?

Thank you in advance

Not an answer to your Q's, but..
We bought an LG, the model with door cooling.

Its an ok fridge, but while the vegetable/fruit crisper is wide, its quite short in depth, almost cant get a whole small/medium cauliflower in…
super annoying its depth is so small

plus make sure your freezer and fridge cooling are seperate. Read somewhere on this one they are joined somehow.

The freezer also seems to cycle through having some moisture.

Would by differently if i could do it again..

    • Thanks for your input. I had a side by side Samsung fridge which let me down in 3 months. The freezer is good but the fridge side has gone terrible. They were separate and yet failed miserably… 😟

  • In a similar position. Would be keen to hear people's real world experience.

Thanks @Austaurean for that point on the veggie crisper. Made a note of it.

    • I also bought an LG fridge with door cooling (330l model). While the crisper's horizontal depth is short (30cm) the height is even less (23cm).

Appearances can be deceiving so it's well worth inspecting the crisper carefully if that space is important to you. There are some models of fridge that have a tapered crisper - it can look large at the front, but when you pull it right out you can see it gets narrower and/or shallower at the back.

Check the warranty that is offered. They are not all the same.

When I bought a fridge recently I mound that the models with the freezer on top were cheaper that the equivalens sized model with the freezer on the bottom from the same manufacturer. They were also slightly more efficient.

Check energy efficiency numbers, not just energy stars. I was comparing two fridges. One was $80 more expensive. Once I calculated that I would save around $100 in energy costs over 10 years I was happy to pay the extra up front for the fridge that looked better hand hand a better warranty.

    • What model you went with? Can I know? Thanks

      • I got the LG 332 litre Top Mount Refrigerator GT-332SDC. I didn't mention it as it's not in the size range you are looking at. I've only had it for a few months so I don't know how well it will perform in the long run.

  • I don't know how traditional you are, but I'll share what works for us.

We picked up a single glass door fridge at an auction almost 15 years ago and are delighted with it. It has 6 adjustable shelves and we can see everything without opening the door for 10 minutes looking for something tempting. We had a small bar-size freezer at the time but upgraded to an upright 6 drawer freezer (thanks to a GREAT deal at Clive Peeters) a few years later. This is the combo I'm going to use as long as I live in a house.

Should I need to replace the fridge, I'm shopping ebay for a new one.

    • That is also a good idea. Thanks for your input. But my kitchen space can't accommodate the separate fridges.

Mitsubishi fridges are one of the best if you want durability.

  • Generally speaking, for the same capacity, a typical top/bottom mount fridge will cost less than a double/french door combination. It's a matter of preference for most people but top mount fridges tend to offer better value.

The other thing I'd highly recommend is to shop around and ask your friends. Most of the makers will have special programs for their employees. Samsung for example, offer discounts to their employees as well additional accounts for friends and family so if you ask around, you never know who in your circle has access.

    good luck!

  • +1 for Mitsubishi, but they are more expensive.

I have a Mitsubishi 574L Multi Drawer Fridge - MR-EX574X-N-A, like everything about it; extremely versatile and silent (my previous Hisense was a bit noisy)

I quickly checked Good Guys Commercial:
There is an LG GS-B680WL (687L) for $1534. It's huge!
