Any chance Amazon AU will source this model from US to get a free delivery for prime member?

    • yeah i don't wanna pay extra for postage

  • +17

Great price but to buy a 32GB tablet in 2020 is ludicrous.

    • +11

      Silly comment.

It has an SD slot, and can take a card up to 1TB.

      • +26

Not really, I have the galaxy tab 16gb with 256gb sd and its kinda useless for most apps etc as it won't fully move the apps to the sd. Even with a rooted device.

        • not that it helps much but this runs OneUI core which is meant to have less features and takes up less of the 32GB

        • +6

So for those of us who have the need for, say less than about 25GB worth of apps, it should be perfectly adequate with an appropriate SD card.

      • yeah, mem is so cheap, and you can't move apps to sd. so annoying

      • +1

I like how you warned everyone that you were going to make a silly comment, first. That was very courteous. Thanks!

    • +7

Kids just watch YouTube, Netflix etc don't really need storage

      • And lots of games

        • So games can't be stored to SD card?

          • @plal: Some can, but many apps required to be installed on main storage.

            • @itstuan: Agree, we are constantly maxing out the memory and having to delete games to install new ones. We can't move any of the games to SD and it is painful because Samsung Kids is otherwise really good!

    • I suppose that’s one of the compromises of a sub $300 tablet.

    • -1

100% agree on this. If you say otherwise, then 8GB would have been fine for you lol

  • +4

    3gb ram, sounds gimped.

How does it compare to the tab s6 lite?

    • +4

SD662 in this is a teeny bit faster than the S6 Lite Exynos 9611.

You can use an S pen on the S6 Lite iirc but this is also so much cheaper for the same display and slightly faster processor. So depends on what you are looking for

      • Ahh okay. It would have been tempting if it had 4gb ram.

        • Exactly this. 3GB for android is so 2018.

          • @[Deactivated]: It so wasn't enough even in 2018

            • @furyou: Fair enough. I got a 3GB basic Samsung tab A back in 2016 for approximately 250$. So yea, atleast 4 to 6GB would have been good.

      • Other way around, this has the 9611, the S6 Lite has the 662. edit: Or I could be entirely wrong on that, that's what the specs say on the Amazon page but everywhere else says the opposite.

Looks like a great traveling media device, seems to be targeted directly at that (especially with the Youtube Premium and Spotify trials), will have to take a look whenever we can travel again.

Might as well grab the Lenovo M10 plus when it's on special. Similar SOC, larger storage and local warranty.

    • +12

keep in mind the Lenovo Tab M10 Plus is only Widevine L3 which means video services like Netflix will only play at Standard Definition (540P)
This Galaxy Tab A7 is Widevine L1 which means it can stream HD resolutions (720p-4K)

    • You can get the M10+ for $229 currently via edu .. but 6 weeks wait!

Lenovo seems to have the better chipset?

      https://versus.com/en/mediatek-helio-p22-vs-qualcomm-snapdra…

      • +6

Yeah those comparison sites are garbage.
For example, the p22 is getting the edge in CPU because it has 4 2.3GHz cores, but it fails to take into account that those cores are all low power cortex A53s, whereas the snapdragon 662 has 4 lower clocked high power Kryo 260s (A73 equivalent)
This phone with the same SoC get's almost twice the score of that tablet in Antutu
        https://www.kimovil.com/en/motorola-moto-g9-play/antutu
        https://www.kimovil.com/en/lenovo-tab-m10-plus-internacional…

      • +5

Uh no. Helio P22 is much slower than SD662. SD662 is similar to SD660 just newer process, which is equivalent of Helio P60/P70. Helio P22 is much lower ends and comparable to SD429 or so.
The Exynos 9611 in the older Tab S6 Lite is similar to SD662 performance but due to older architecture (A73 and A53) and also older process, it's slightly slower and consume more energy.

This gives you a reasonably accurate chart
        https://www.gsmarena.com/antutus_new_chart_compares_the_true…
Bearing in minds Antutu combine CPU, GPU, AI compute (NPU) etc. into single score but this should gives you an idea.

      • Dang that's a good deal. If I didn't get the alldocube iPlay 20 I'd definitely jump on it.

        • +1

the all do cube is better and cheaper

          • +1
          • @9hundred: Hey 900. Was thinking about the Samsung in this deal but read all the comments and I'm intrigued about this 'all do' unit you mention. I've been out of the generic Android tablet game for many years but this one look very very well rated and the price is amazing! So if I was to put the Samsung and the 'all do' side by side what would be the main differences for general use (web browsing, e-reading and Netflix streaming?). Thanks in advance!

            • +1

@SteveAndBelle: I think they compare very closely. The reviews are positive in almost exactly the same areas on both. The match is too close to call. Alldocube has 4gb ram, but Samsung usually has the better screen.

            • +1

@SteveAndBelle: In that case definitely get either this Samsung or Lenovo M10.

Alldocube's screen despite having good colours also comes with quite a bit of ghosting. That makes web browsing and video watching far less enjoyable.

Amount of ram and storage isn't much relevant in your use cases.

In terms of CPU, Samsung > Lenovo M10 = alldocube.

On the other hand, alldocube has 4g LTE which other two don't.

              • +1

@MadMaxBargainRoad: the reviews say that the alldocube has a great screen and excellent battery life and more ram and much cheaper

                • +2

@9hundred: I have it. Screen is good overall but has pretty bad ghosting. Battery is also smaller than Samsung by a tad bit; and yes it's cheapest 4g lte tablet with decent specs.

However that's not what @SteveAndBelle's priorities lie.

                  • @MadMaxBargainRoad: I'm wondering whether the fact you're getting ghosting is a defect? Could be you got a dud. After all that is the main difference between cheaper Chinese stuff to something like the Samsung tablet (QC).

                    • +1

@AncientWisdom: That's entirely possible. Also due the lack of local warranty, there really isn't any good way to find out unless I fork out shipping which costs as much as the unit itself.

Oh well, it's all part of the "budget tablet" equation.

                • +4

@9hundred: I have one as well, just bought recently from Geekbuying when it was $170ish. Have to say I'm quite happy with the screen, haven't noticed ghosting as reported. We have 2 ipads and 1 iPad pro for my daughters for comparison, and the alldocube is great value.

                  • +3

@x d: +1 for the Alldocube iPlay 20. Bought it in the last deal posted on OB and have had it about 2 weeks. No ghosting, great screen, snappy, and about to add a 4G simcard to make it a phablet and have data on the go.
64Gb is sufficient. Android 10 takes 8.4Gb and I've only used 30% of the storage and that's with over 100 Apps.
I also recommend getting the $12 cover which is a great fit and acts as a flip stand.

                    • @DarrylD: yeah i think i will order that, the best thing is that it doesn't look cheap.

                      • +1

@9hundred: I'm sure you'll be more than happy with it. One more thing, it's a clean install of Android 10, no bloatware. I cloned my Pixel 3XL to it as a perfect match.
Re the cover, I carefully carved a bit of the plastic away from around the on/off switch as it is a bit too tight. otherwise, expect your colleagues to ask you which Samsung model is that? (mine did :-)

                    • @DarrylD: Hi there. Can you please share link for the cover?

                  • @x d: Excellent XD (& others above), thanks for the feedback & iPad comparison. I'm actually looking for my brother who'll be mainly using it to read sheet music but of course if you're going to invest in something you may as well try to get a device that can do as much as possible at a reasonable quality for as little as possible. I've had very good luck with generic Chinese devices over the years so I'm thinking the AllDoCube might be the winner here however the Lenovo may also win purely because he has an edu email address and he might be attracted to the 'big saving'. We'll see. Thanks again!

  • +4

"3GB RAM" Ugg this again. The last version is pretty shit with 3gb ram, everything is just laggy.

    • The last version is slow due to the slow SoC rather than RAM really, the Tab A10.1 last year is equipped with Exynos 7904 which is a budget SoC equivalent to the Helio P22 on the Lenovo. No matter how much RAM you throw at it it will be sluggish.

      • +1

1GB RAM costs $10 max, the benefit is far more.

        • +1

Yeah - I don't know why they don't throw more RAM into lower-mid end tablets these days. Possibly because it will prevent people from buying more expensive models?

          • +1

@soymeat: For a brand like samsung, they have to get their products to look a certain way in shops.
Their cheap tablets need to look cheap, and their expensive tablets need to look good.
There's a lot of ways they've made their cheap tablets look cheap in the past: 800p screens in 2018, massive bezels, plastic frame, but for this one it's gonna be making it look less "snappy"
Those pauses it takes to load things not in RAM from eMMC, if one of those happens when a spec snob is playing with it in the shop, it might push them up the product stack, and for samsung, that means up about $250.

TL;DR it's a retail thing. You can't have the cheap thing look and act pretty much the same as the thing that's twice the price.

I am going to try out the Chuwi Hipad X for approx $245 (USD $169.95). It has a P60 Mediatek CPU, 6GB RAM, 128GB UFS 2.1, dual SIM LTE, stylus support, android 10 and a magnetic keyboard/touchpad available. It is 100g heavier than the Aldocube at 550g, and more chunky, but has metal construction, a faster CPU, 7000mAh battery and a slightly better but probably still crappy selfie camera for Zoom etc.
I thought it sounded ok so I ordered it last week. "Fasttech" seem to take ages shipping though. You may be able to get more reliable/better price from others.
    https://www.fasttech.com/p/9732384

    https://www.kimovil.com/en/compare-tablets/alldocube-iplay20…

    • May I ask you where do you see it at $245 (USD $169.95) ? Thanx.

    • Thanks placed an order for the Chuwi. Nice to have an all you can do tablet for things around the house and out and about with the kids.

      Ok price as well.

Wondering if I should get a case or go bare, given the price.

      • +1

Heres an unboxing and good look at the tablet.

        https://youtu.be/BIvQhyJR98c

All in Thai but damn Apple wants their bezels back.

        • FYI Fasttech price for the Hipad X has gone up to USD191.95
Probably jacking it before they take off the 10% for their Halloween sale coming up.

  • Whilst this caught my eye what do people in the know recommend as the best value tablet for a wall dashboard to run HASSIO Lovelace UI? That’s really all it has to do 7-8” would be a fine size. Screen should be at least fairly decent to look at.

  • I clicked on the link to the deal (amazon), and i am seeing AUD241.15 + 26.14 shipping. have i got the right deal?
edit: went to checkout and GST was added, bringing it to 294.01

  • can this install twrp/magisk?

  • I paid 10x this for my Tab S7 and don't feel like it's 10x better than the A7, lately all I've been doing is watching shows on it which this would do just as well.

    • +7

      You paid 3k?

      • D'oh stupid me, it was $1,600 for the 256GB/8GB with the keyboard cover. I was looking at the Amazon price which is in USD $169.

    • Why not sell and buy something cheaper?

      • I thought with the way Dex was advertised I would use it as a great secondary computer at work as well (I work in I.T.) but after using it found the limitations eg. Lastpass won't work at all in Dex mode, the multitasking is there but they're still Android apps. I do RDP into the Windows notebook to do most things because it's easier. I guess I'm just holding out for custom ROMs at this stage

    • That’s why I ended up with the tab S5e, it basically flagship thin nice display and speakers but compromised on performance. At the end of the day it was the best bang for bucks multimedia tablet I could find at the time.

  • "Ultra widescreen display"?
Is this wider or less wide than 16:9?

    • In landscape more it has more height.

      Full HD is 1920x1080

So this one is slightly wider but a lot taller than Full HD.

      • So slight black bars for 16:9 content. I'd hope they would be right where the corners of the screen start to curve. Would really bug me if the bars started mid curve for some reason lol

  • FYI
Tab A7 2020 product link page is up in Samsung AU
    https://www.samsung.com/au/tablets/galaxy-tab-a/

    4G LTE - https://www.samsung.com/au/tablets/galaxy-tab-a7-t505/SM-T50…
    Wifi - https://www.samsung.com/au/tablets/galaxy-tab-a7-t500/SM-T50…

It might begin at A$349 price range most likely, looking at how it is priced in the US vs last year's Tab A 2019 10.1" 32GB Wifi model @ US$229.
The new Tab A7 2020 10.4" 32GB Wifi model is US$229 as well.

At least here in AU, we get 2 yrs local warranty.

  • Comes with US charge plug?

    • +3

According to Apple, we all should have USB charge bricks laying around everywhere in the house.

  • wish samsung made the lower range with S pen like my 2016 tab A 10.1 love it and i use the S pen feature all day every day.
