Monitor DP Handshake Issues? New LG 27GN950 monitor

I just bought a new monitor, the LG 27GN950 to complement my existing LG 27UD58P. I was very excited about the nano-IPS, wide colour gamut HDR600 and swallowed the $1499 price. Brought it home, plugged it in and the colours, 120Hz refresh (1080Ti doesn't support DSC so no 144Hz without going 4:2:2). Then the problems started…

I tidied up my desk, and for that I powered down my computer and unhooked all cables. Connected both monitors and then powered on the PC. Perfect so far. Then I left the PC alone for some time and both monitors went to sleep.

When the mouse is moved to wake up the PC, only one monitor would wake up, the secondary one. The 27GN950 stubbornly refuses to see any DP input. It wakes up when the computer is woken up (screen lights up, RGB lights on the back illuminate), and then it gets stubbornly stuck in not recognising any DP input at all, and turns itself off with the "no signal" message. Unplugging/re-plugging the DP cable and monitor power cable does nothing. Neither does restarting the computer. Nothing short of shutting down the PC and powering it on works to resolve the issue.

This problem only occurs when the 27GN950 is one of two monitors on the PC. Doesn't matter if it's the primary display or not. Tried both DP ports on the GPU (ROG Strix 1080Ti), two different DP cables, same issue. In dual-monitor configuration, when the PC and monitor both go to sleep, the 27GN950 refuses to "handshake" when woken up.

I have initiated an RMA with the retailer, but it is a very disappointing niggle for a $1500 monitor. The same problem has been reported on reddit as well

Just a little PSA for those considering the display.

Comments

  • If its a common issue for the model what is an rma going to do ?

    • I'm going to ask for a return and refund.

I posted this as a PSA so others considering the monitor can be aware as well

    • I have run the firmware update tool to ensure my card supports DP1.4. The issue is the monitor waking up from sleep in a dual-display setup and refusing to acknowledge any input. The refresh rate etc is all working as normal.

  • Scorptec accepted the return and issued credit. I have requested for a refund.

  • Got the refund. All sorted. Not going back to these LGs now, will await the AW3821DW

  • Same issue here on the 27GN950. If the monitor falls asleep of its own accord, it will not work again until unplugging the power cable briefly. You can tell when its happening because when pressing power button on the monitor wont beep like it normally does, despite the rear RGB lights turning on, and the monitor display 'no signal'.
If the monitor is turned off by the power button before it can go to sleep by itself, there doesn't appear to be any issues when resuming use (i can live with this at least temporarily).
Hoping for a firmware update, as I'm pretty happy with the monitor other than that.

    • The problem is, my desktop remains on throughout the day. Unless I completely disable sleep mode altogether, the monitor will eventually go to sleep when I leave the desk for lunch etc. And then the problems start.

I have my 27UD58 for now, and I will likely replace it with a duo of AW3821DW and AW2721W, or I might keep the 4k60 and add the 3821DW…
