Best Bargain 5G Modem

Whats is a bargain price 5G modem at the moment, is it the JB hifi s20 FE 5G deal at $594 and using as 5G hotspot?

I have a 5G from telstra per the current $115 less $50 sim plan with 180gb pm

I also got one of the mango portable routers from recent prime day.

However, I now need a 5G modem/device to connect the two, what best buy for 5G modem?

You don't have many options with 5g modems at this stage, and none of them I would say are 'bargain'.
    Nokia Fastmile (optus)
    HTC Hub (Telstra).
    Telstra 5G Wi Fi Pro
    Huawei CPE Pro
    Netgear Nighthawk M2 (5g version).

If you have better options if you were to go a 4g modem.

    • I never understood the pricing on these, when you can get a fully featured 5g phone for less.

      Nokia Fastmile (optus)
Guess that's only $200 on the optus month-to-month … not sure how easily you can plug in a telstra sim though.

      • Band comptatibility and just generally avoiding battery and heat issues from extended hotspot

  • So then best "deal" would be using a 5G phone as a hotspot if the modems are too pricy.

I saw Telstra was selling their 5G pocket modem for $500 and I think asking that price cause they know demand peeking with COVID work from home requirements.

    • Historically all LTE modems have been expensive even before COVID.
OP does it have to be 5g.
Some 4g modems are pretty decent once you take into account carrier aggregation.

      • Honestly the only reason going 5G is because I am able to use it on Telstra plan, otherwise already using plan on current hotspot but on a 4G phone.

I thought if there were a cheap 5G modem then pay to upgrade and take advantage of 5G but looks like best option is upgrade to a new 5G phone instead of just getting a simlple 5G modem/router.

  • Same as I posted on another thread there are plenty of the Huawei 5G modems on eBay, if your lucky uou might find the ZTE MU500 5G Modem cheap then what Telstra sells them for,. cheap ive seen them secondhand below $200 on eBay, yes the ZTE new is $599 from Telstra though honestly not sure if its locked,, anyone try one and knows?
But suggest you stick to buying a portable version too i.e with built in battery
as depending on your location from the 5G tower you'll need something too move around while indoors anyway there also handy for portable use .. here is an eBay search I done👍😀
Yes there unlocked but double check with sellers

edit: if you have an Optus data plan you should get 5G on your simcard with no extra costs, though different story with Telstra

  • Any chance we will see any cheap 5G dongles?

  • Hey guys,

Any idea how much the Nokia Fastmile modem is worth used? Are they locked to a carrier if they are from the Optus plan?

  • No where to buy those 5g modems. Even nighthawk on Telstra website is out of stock.
