  Only sign up for a credit card when there is a good sign up bonus. Essentials is a good card free for life. It currently doesn’t have any referee bonus points, only referrer bonus points.

  Qantas premium has a good sign up bonus - 100,000 Qantas points - but it's a higher annual fee. Would recommend just for the points.

  Lower end David Jones Amex has an increased sign up bonus until 1st November of 45,000 points with $99 annual fee.

  Really depends on what you want out of the card and how long you intend to keep it. American express will let you change card (equivalent card or downgrade to no annual fee one) after you have one, but I'd recommend going for a good sign up bonus instead of a $0 annual fee one.

  If you plan on earning as many points as possible - sign up for the higher bonus points and cancel the card within the first 12 months. Only downside is having to wait 18 months to re-qualify for bonus points. In my own experience, I can't spend enough money to earn the equivalent sign up bonus points (even after years of having a card) so I'm more inclined to churn cards.

  Also if you do want to churn cards to earn bonus points - the David Jones Amex is separate to the regular line, so you could alternate cards whilst waiting to re-qualify for bonus points.

      Yep I waited for the increased points to finally sign up this year! Also i remember many years ago (yikes maybe 10?) they gave me a free gift card for trying to sign up to the card in store but they somehow lost my application but still got to keep the card. Literally free money!
