Not really what you want to hear, but on those really hot Melbourne days, an evaporative system is not a good solution. Too humid.

    • Very true. We wish we spent the extra bucks on refrigerated. It has gotten to the point where we just use the evaporative system to circulate air around the house.

      • OK. Why would you want to circulate air drawn from the hot outside? Or do you not use it in summer? I'm confused.

To circulate air, open the windows. Maybe buy a pedestal fan or two.

For cooling in Melb, you need a refrigerated thing. A couple of splits will still be cheaper than an evaporative, with all the ducting and vents etc….

Sounds like you never use evaporative cooling, for it to work you'll need to have some windows open because the system will create a positive air pressure inside the house (it will bring in outside air and mix with water, make some of the water evaporate to cool it down and then push through the duct, doing so will push some of the hot air out of the house).

        • A couple of splits will still be cheaper than an evaporative,

Not after you take into account the running costs.

not true, Melbourne rarely get humid, and almost impossible to get humid on those 40 degree day. Anyone made such claim are those that never live in true humid tropical where relative humidity rarely get below 80%.

But back on the topic, don't waste money on evaporative cooling because it will not be as effective (but better than nothing, on a 40+ day walking in a house with evaporative you can definitely feel cooler, but the system can only bring temperature down below 30 and make it manageable).

    • Its for a property that I am turning into a rental.

Even more reason to stick with AC.

    • Too humid.

      Hardly…

Not many humid days in Melbourne. It's not Sydney or Brisbane here…

  • I had evaporative about 15 years ago and wow did I love the cool and fresh air. Maybe it wasn't so humid back then.

Prune Heating and Cooling and more experienced…

  • Few Quotes I have gotten have been close to $6000 for a 5 outlet basic system which seems outrageous.

  • Had evap for many years, then installed a decent size reverse cycle A/C for the main living area, solar and never looked back since. Haven't used my evaporative cooler or central ducted gas heating for years now (come to think of it I should probably just switch the units off!)

  • I am happy with my evaporative cooling. I don't need refrigerated air, just cool air. Besides the electricity bill for air con would bankrupt me.

Of course it is not perfect, but cools the house sufficiently to make it comfortable for me.

At night I have a ceiling fan in the bedroom which enables me to sleep without any problems. Usually have to turn it off during the night as it gets a bit too chilly.

I bought my system from Dale Air and happy with their service. They also installed a new furnace unit for my ducted heating last year and both systems run on the one controller - both Brivis units. Dale Air often have good deals so you could be lucky and get one now before summer starts.
