Vibrating Noises in Ear When Hearing Humming/Motoric Noise

I keep hearing this gentle vibrating/stomping noise inside my ear whenever I listen to any humming/machinery noise since 2 weeks ago.

I first noticed this when i turned on the kitchen exhaust fan, I kept thinking that maybe that the exhaust fan is broken or something.

But then I hear the same noise when i turned on the fan inside my room, that's where I realised its not those things that are broken, its my ear.
It only happens when the humming/machinery noise exist, if it's dead quiet, then I don't hear it.

Went to GP and he told me its tinnitus. However I am not sure that it is? Then, GP told me to go to specialist to get further checks. Called specialist, has to wait 2 months for the first available slot (great :D )

Anyone here ever experiencing the same pain like me? How do you handle this? Any tips/advices are very more than welcomed…

So you don't believe the GP's diagnosis, but you will take the medical advice of the Ozbargain community?

Doesn't sound like tinnitus to me

      • I mean I did think it was HummyEaritis when I first read it….but dunno.

      On OP's post

I feel it is the 2 months delay that has caused their posting here and now.

      • Thanks for helping me explaining the reason this post was created.

Simply just want to know if any of you guys had same experience and can share the story with me.

Search little further and you'll end up diagnosing yourself with a lot of serious diseases.

      • It's likely to be an aggressive ear cancer that will first cause deafness and then death! LOL

  • has to wait 2 months for the first available slot (great :D )

Public hospital ? Can't you get a closer date in a private clinic ?

    • yes did call the other private clinics but none of them has earlier date unfortunately!

  • Did the GP check your ears at all or just diagnose you from describing your symptoms?
I had a similar thing with similar triggers: fan noise from the AC, bathroom, fridge etc. Cause was my ear drum being inflamed from the flu, went away after 2 or so weeks for me though.

    • He did check my ears.

Not that I don't believe that he said to me, but we all know that it's very rare to find good GP in here.

That's a relief to hear that it went away after 2 weeks or so for you. Did you go to GP and been prescribed any medications? Or just simply lived with it?

      • Since it was viral I was told to just to rest which is what I did and just lived with it.
They did offer for me to come back for antibiotics if it didn't go away on its own, but reiterating it's unlikely to be bacterial so antibiotics were unlikely to help anyway and I didn't end up going back for them.

  • Is it painful?

    Can you control the noise??

Weird questions, I know, but if you are flexing your tensor tympani muscle (either deliberately or unconsciously with noise) then it can cause similar effects in your hearing.

    Ear Rumblers Assemble!

    • Is it painful?

      No

      Can you control the noise??

I can by not being in the place with air con/fan/machineries noises.
But I can't manually blocked out the noise myself

  • I don’t know what state you live in when I had ear problems I went to the emergency department eye and ear hospital in Melbourne which is located in the city had to wait awhile but they sorted it out very quickly it was an ear infection the doctor I saw was surprised that the gp couldn’t solve it he was a specialist ear doctor.

    • Thanks, we'll see what the specialist will say…not all GPs know what they're doing anyway.

  • Not a professional advice: something similar happened to me a while back. I started gargling warm salt water twice a day and it stopped. Having said that, I'm not sure if the salt water did the trick or if it just went away on its own.
