Worst thing for your health, use the raw kernels when you can. $$$ saving too if thats the aim

    • +1

Any further explanation on this? Other than the butter and salt that is added?

I'll copy and paste my comment from the last time I saw this:

Cheaper to buy and pop kernels: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/793538/riv…

        $2.77 for 400g (4 pack)
        $1.95 for 400g kernels

Best part is you get to DIY flavour. Coconut oil, olive oil, salt, unsalted, caramel, chilli, etc etc. It's quick to do, and you get to control how healthy they are. Make as much or as little as you need.

If you want to get pedantic about it, it will have more upfront costs such as the oil.

Assuming making 4 equivalent batches to the sachets

        Olive oil from Woolies ($3 for 500ml) -> 4 tbsp -> 60ml -> 36 cents
Gas cost (supposedly uses between 5 and 15 MJ per hour so lets say 10) -> 10 minutes total gas use -> 1.66 MJ -> 3 cents per MJ -> 5 cents *4
        Cleaning cost -> dishwasher uses ~20L + electricity -> 20 cents of water + 20 cents of electricity -> 40 cents *4

        Total: $4.11 (including kernels)

If we ignore dishwashing costs (you should just be putting in the pot with your other dirty plates) then it'll be cheaper to DIY popcorn.

Reasonable deal, but I also buy those raw kernal's from woolworths as it's cheaper (especially for how much I make it) and imo the pre-flavoured ones leave a fatty after-taste.

I use an air popper currently and use a oil spray bottle filled with coconut oil then add Flavacol salt.
          Flavacol 200g

Then put it in my somewhat espensive yet good bowl to filter unpopped kernal's and shake flavour throughout.
          [Kernel Katcher Popcorn Bowl] (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B017J6G1KK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i…)

Haven't tried the popcorn butter you can get yet but the flavacol butter salt does quite well. The only other thing I'd like is a whirly pop popcorn pot (apparently good?), as I find airpopped leaves a fair few unpopped kernal's.

          Definitely a popcorn fan.

If you want to take it to the next level, consider investing in these:

          https://www.williams-sonoma.com.au/whirley-pop
          https://www.partyhut.com.au/products/category/SWOUSPHR-popco…

The Flavacol gives it that movie theatre taste, you can go as hard on it as you wish (obviously it's mostly salt, so too much too often is probably not a great idea). That 1kg package will last you forever. The Whirley Pop is by far the best way to pop popcorn, it's made really well and should also last forever.

Edit: oops, I only skimmed your post before replying, I see you're familiar with both Flavacol and Whirley Pops already. I can definitely vouch for Whirley Pops, they're a game changer if you're a popcorn connoisseur. I'll leave my post as is for other people's sake.

          • @axel32: Thanks for the links I might look at getting a whirly pop soon.

I've heard good things and read when tested against other cooking methods it had the least unpopped kernal's remaining generally.

I'm curious to know, what kind of oil do you normally use (is coconut oil fine with a whirly pop) and have you ever tried other varieties of popcorn kernals or just use normal supermarket type?

@Shisn0: I used this for the longest time and can recommend it, but hard to source:
              https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002YLI9E2/

It's basically just coconut oil with added beta-carotene (so nothing artificial). It turns the popcorn yellow which when combined with Flavacol completes the "movie theatre" popcorn experience.

Right now just using normal coconut oil or olive oil. Both work great and I don't think it changes the taste much either way.

Have tried fancier big kernels and they are better (you get bigger fluffier popcorn) but most of the time just use store bought stuff.

      • i believe studies show microwave popcorn has an additive that is bad for lungs/

        • +2

That plus the bags they come in are often lined with potentially harmful chemicals (PFOA and PFAS). Whether or not that scares you off though is personal cause realistically they're in more things than just microwave popcorn bags and if you eat them that often it's probably not the only health implication you should be concerned about.

That was removed ages ago due to people developing "popcorn lung" - American lawsuits. The ingredients in Poppin don't have the nasties mentioned in the linked articles. The most of the concerns are a non-issue these days and these articles need to be updated.

Anyhow, I miss Uncle Toby's brand popcorn. It was far superior to Poppin. Then, American popcorn is best again flavour-wise and yes, it is genetically modified (at a detriment to farmers) by ConAgra and Monsanto.

It's to do with the oils that line the bags:

You may want to add a recommendation of the best way to pop your corn, too. I personally prefer my electric air popper but, alas, I find myself in a position where it's still packed in a box in Qld. I have used plain paper bags in the microwave before, but with disappointing results, and oil in a saucepan on the stovetop would be frowned upon by the rest of the household who don't like the smell.

          • @Chazzozz: We just bought the silicone bowls that go in the microwave, but still experimenting as there are quite a few unpropped kernels with this method.

            • @mrderrickc: Two words, Whirley Pop.

              • @axel32: Desk pop

              • @axel32: Will try to convince the missus, we're not normally a fan of single use appliances and this seems to take up lots of room. It was the reason we went for a collapsible silicone one.

            @Chazzozz:

What a time to be alive.

          • @Chazzozz: Posted this elsewhere, but Whirley Pop hands down. Sprinkle in some Flavacol for an amazing taste. You will never buy microwave popcorn again.

            • +1

@axel32: Colour me intrigued - are these locally available in Australia? Both eBay and Amazon seem to only have them from overseas.

Strike that, I just saw your comment above. Checking 'em out right now!

This is article terrible. The first reason why you should NEVER eat microwave popcorn is according to the article…GMOs… which I won't bother explaining how silly that is. The second reason is the ingredient 'Diacetyl', which going off the ingredients list, isn't on it. The third reason is the the dangers of the ingredient in the second reason, which again isn't listed. The fourth reason is the one you're referring to "Perfluorooctanoic acid". The chemical itself is dangerous when taken in high amounts (such as during the manufacturing process) The fifth reason is preservatives, which isn't listed in the ingredients list.

To learn more about it from a reasonable reputable source, https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/factsheets/Pages/p…

        • My comment to this thread before reading any replies was going to be 'does anyone else find these are always covered in butter/grease like they just hose them with the stuff'.

Then i read the comments about popcorn lung and the additives being bad and causing cancer. I follow the article linked above and after reading the article it says that:

"The possible link between microwave popcorn and cancer isn’t from the popcorn itself, but from chemicals called perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) that are >in the bags. PFCs resist grease, making them ideal for preventing oil from seeping through popcorn bags."

So this would indicate to me that, at least this brand isn't using PFC as an additive. It also answers the question i came into the thread to ask, as to why the bags are so greasy(and i assume everyone notices this); and its because the bags aren't lined with any PFC and are thus enabling the oils on the inside to seep through.

    • awesome thread

  • just in time for celebrating Dan’s announcement!

    • Okay which part in particular?

  • this popcorn is ZEEEEEEEEEROOO 👌
