X9000h HDMI2.1 Blur Is "Normal" According to Sony, How to Organise Return?

Don't know if anyone has been following this saga with the x9000h series, but here is the latest update from Vincent Teoh with Sony's response:

This is a deal breaker and I want to return. Problem is I bought via Sony corporate back in early September.

Do owners have a dispute here? How do we organise a return past the one month window when Sony claims there's no issue?

    • The 4k120 update was never officially released in Australia. We manually updated it using a firmware update from the Asia/Pacific website and it still had the blur. An update was just released in the US a week ago and 4k120 blur is still there, despite this being the second update meant to address the issue.

      • See the latest dates thrown around? An Aussie Redditor claims Sony told him 2nd December for an update, but that just sounds like the same update recently released in the USA that didn't fix anything.

Digital tv trends YT Channel says he spoke to Sony and was told by the end of December would be the blur fix.

        • Yeah I have seen that date thrown around. Very skeptical though as wasn't there a given date in November for an update and nothing happened? You're right, it's probably going to be the same as that update the US got last week which didn't fix anything.

And yeah the dates always seem to move around, end of December, really? The TV was advertised as ready for PS5, it certainly isn't 100% ready with the 4k120 blur issue with PS5.

I think the main thing of the VRR and ALLM features still not being on the Australian website is the main dealbreaker for us. What does this mean? Sony couldn't comment.

  • Interesting. Looks like I'll wait for 2021 for a HDMI 2.1 TV then.

    • If you can wait and the 2.1 features are important to you, I'd advise doing that. We are either going to get a LG CX instead or will wait until next year. Just trying to make that decision now.

  • Meh I thought about it and for PS5 4K@60fps is the sweet spot for me. 60fps is more than enough for me anyway on any game I play.

Ended up getting a 75" EKO for $799 (usually $1499) that looks really good for the price. Saw a video on facebook and a PS5 was hooked up to it and looked and played fantastic. I've thrown some silly money at tvs in the past so thought I'd break away from that this time.

    Cheers

Quick update. We decided to get the LG CX instead. They're out of stock at the moment, but we've only paid the difference (yay for Black Friday sales), and when the new TV is delivered TGG will take the Sony, so we get to use it until we have the new TV.

Decided not to wait for next year's TV's due to not only the wait but the fact the price will be a lot higher than what we can pay now for the LG CX. LG has also proved that they can provide quick updates (their update from last week is already available on the Australian website, while Sony still hasn't provided any official updates for Australia.) Even though Sony's are priced well I wouldn't trust getting one of their TV's again after this fiasco.

    • Yeah it seems you guys made the right choice. Sony has been embarrassing as of late not just with this TV, but the PS5 not able to currently do full 444 Chroma. They're taking shortcuts and not telling anyone. They just seem to be a fan of uncrisp images.

I might follow your path in December; take advantage of Boxing Day sales. Will miss Android TV though. I guess this is it for you guys! Whilst its been under unpleasant conditions it was actually nice sharing this journey with you both. Enjoy the CX!

      • Yeah don't know why Sony thinks it's acceptable to just do shortcuts like this. I guess they're just relying on the fact that most of their customers won't know what 4:4:4 chroma means and can't tell the difference between a clear 4k image and an upscaled image. Also all the people that are like, 4k120 doesn't matter!

Despite the burn-in risk with Oled, I've seen nothing but praise for LG from people who have managed to get assistance from them even 4-5 years after they bought their TV when it's well and truly out of warranty. LG seems to prioritise customer experience and loyalty, so we feel assured getting the CX. One of our friends bought another LG TV because they were willing to fix a 5 year old LG TV he had.

I agree, it's been great to not have to go through this alone, thanks for all your input! Let us know what you end up doing, I will be curious to see what your final outcome is. :)

I raised the issue with VRR and VLLM's removal with Sony Support and similar canned response saying it's included in the next update… it's not, obviously.

It is still listed in the support documentation https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/televisions-projā€¦

So, perhaps due to AU advertising requirements it had to be removed from the specs page. Either way, I've contacted Sony again as I bought this for VRR support. 4K120, I can live without for PS5 and XBSX. VRR, not so much.

    I'll keep you posted.

  • I decided to look up the megathread for this TV on the Bravia subreddit today curious to see if there were any developments. Looks like Sony have removed the VRR and ALLM features from multiple countries' websites including the US. Sony Support is even telling some people when asked that those features will no longer be coming.

    • Hey! You're still visiting sony sites even though you've now got the CX? I still have my Sony, i looked at CX's over boxing day but they are sold out everywhere near me. Still sucks that this is my only TV and will have none if i return it.

Yeah i visit the AVS/Reddit forums everyday, both places are now literally on fire about Sony's latest shenanigans. I was going to wait until the next update before demandnig a refund, as that would make 4 updates now and support keeps telling me to 'wait for next update' everytime i speak to them. This latest stunt might've just pushed it over the edge even though they removed VRR / ALLM from the Aus site for a couple months now as you know.

Did you see the new announcement for the 2021 sets? They still have 'VRR & ALLM in future updates' on them, what a joke. And they told Vincent Teoh that the new sets won't have blur @ 4k120, which says to me is definitely a hardware defect if they're still skirting around the issue with the 9000h.

      • I like to check in every now and then to see if Sony ever resolved the issue.. It's seeming like they're planning to never fix it!

I know the CX is sold out everywhere, but is it not possible to order it on backorder? Although I realise that even if that were offered, you're probably not going to get the best price.

Yeah I saw the announcement for the new TV's, what a joke! LG and Samsung have those features working with current TV's out of the box, why can't Sony figure those features out? Some people are saying they should get their X9000h swapped over for the X9000j as reimbursement, but the only thing that seems like it will definitely fix is the blurry 4k120, they'd still have to wait for VRR/ALLM. Agreed that it seems like there is a hardware limitation on the X9000h when they're talking about an updated chipset on the new TV.
