Why Do a Lot of Drivers Need to Be Honked at When The Light Turns Green?

Hi Guys:D

Why do a lot of drivers need to be honked at when the light turns green?

I noticed that I need to honk for at least one driver every day when the light turns green. No I am not an impatient driver that honks within 1 second of the light turning green. I give the car in front at least 6 seconds to move off before I honk at them.

Cheers:)

I'll honk faster than that if your head is down looking at a phone!

The same goes once moving - bump into the lane markings both sides of your lane - you'll get a honk until you look up and drive in the lane.

Some people drive manual. It takes a few second to get the car moving. Things are not how you think it is.

        • I drive manuals and suggest I'm actually faster - the car doesn't creep forward by itself if I take the brake off, so I can get to the throttle pedal before the green and launch immediately without shifting my feet

    • yeh that I've seen a lot of…

Drivers who don't go at the green light should be honked, why would you even need a second or 2 just to get the car going? It's not about being impatient.. if there's no reason to wait, why wait a second (or even 2), if it's green you go.

  • The most valuable thing in life is time

  • GOTTA WAKE THEM UP

Seeing people on their phone while driving is the inky time I wish I were a cop.

Another kind of driver that annoy me are the ones on the highway who sit on your ass when you're doing the speed limit when the right lane is clear.

  • Distracted by their phone

Got honked on a green right arrow last night.
Fair call, but I wasn't on the phone, but was thinking about something, and a bit tired after a long day.

On the flip side, I very rarely honk others when they make the same mistake.

    • -1

Maybe use that as a lesson rather than excusing your actions. It may only be 1 set of lights for you but the other cars you have prevented from getting through the intersection may have had the same issue at multiple sets of lights along the way.

  • -4

I honk just for the lols, as SOON as the light turns green. Driver in front is always SUPER pissed.

    VERY lol.

    • +1

You piss people off for fun… Very LOL or just retarded?

  • Checking their phones for Facebook or message updates

I see it all the time

    Police don’t seem very interested

The only good reason why you don't race off from the lights when it turns green is to avoid red-light kunners.

If the intersection looks clear from your viewpoint and the first car at the lights hasn't moved, for any reason, honking them is applauded.

Everyone is on the road network with an objective of getting to a destination, whoever is holding up progress is clearly an obstacle in everyone else's way.

The only ethical solution is to ban those drivers who regularly fail to move in an effective manner from lights, as they are a detriment to progress.

I do a gentle honk occasionally.

When I get gently honked I give a thank-you wave.

    • I work on the road all day and see many drivers react after get honked. if you get two slow reacting drivers you couldn't be patient and your honk cannot be gentle. I see every single days without exception.

    • I hope you move then wave, not the other way around - making it worse!

      • +1

Nope. I wave first. So they see it.

        • Haha well to me the best 'thank you' is getting out of the way and paying more attention from then on, but you do you

  • I'll never honk again after watching unhinged lol

    • I watch Unhinged today…. but will honk again and again or I will be running late every trips on my running board.

  • Every now and then I cop a honk in the second or two it takes me to react to the light change, put the car in gear, and move off the line. Some people are just impatient arseholes.

But yes most of the time that person I front of you is on their phone.

What gets me more is the chain reaction of potato speed reaction times when the light goes green. When each car takes a few seconds to react to what the car in front is doing, rather than watching the light so you can all move off at roughly the same time, if you're 5 cars back it can be a long wait before you can actually move.

  • At the traffic light you need to activate the sensor to get your turning light. It is just before the stop line on the lane . Many drivers stop their car way before the trigger and wait and wait and wait… but still just get green light not the green arrow light. If you are behind them you will be crazy…

  • So that they can stick a middle finger back at you afterwards.

Some countries have count down traffic lights which I find them useful for busy cities. I think Sydney should install them.

    • Countdown for busy intersections should be mandatory to keep a good flow of traffic.

    • +1

That wouldn't solve anything though. Most issues are people looking at something in their car, usually their phone. They're still going to be looking at those things rather than the count down.

  • I've never had to honk at anybody at an intersection, maybe you are impatient ._. some people honk me even if I'm a second late

  • Bargain!

  • If you're on pole, you have an obligation to get off the line quickly, but you should be aware of red-light runners too. Just stay focused if you're on the front row.

  • If someone honked at me 1sec after the lights turn green. I would turn off the engine, put the emergency lights on until the next round.

  • i only honk if they haven't released the break pedal (if i'm the second or third car) … means they're not even paying attention! If I'm far away and can't see ahead…i'm assuming it's traffic but will honk after 3secs in case the cars ahead are also distracted

  • People are just too bloody impatient. The other day I had a (profanity) in a Mercedes beep me when I slowed down for a school zone. It is usually an 80km/h road and I had plenty of space ahead, but I could not get over as there was a bus beside me, would have had to speed to get in front. Just an impatient idiot, saw him in my rear vision mirror coming up from behind going well over the limit. Then when I got out of the school zone and put the foot down on the accelerator, he sits there holding up the traffic behind him. Just cannot understand some people.

    I live by one rule

If you don't have the time to get out of your car and fight me, do not, -and I cannot stress this enough…

…do not honk your horn at me.

I also live by another rule, aways keep a legal weapon underneath your drivers seat.

    • -1

I don't think I have ever honked at a driver in front of me for taking too long.

I don't really see what all the rush is about…if you were really worried about getting somewhere by a certain time you would have just left five minutes earlier.

    • If you want to fight someone for honking you, especially when you are doing the wrong thing, you're an idiot.
Imagine if it was a family member that was on the other end of some psychopath wanting to attack them for honking at a set of lights.

Have fun complaining about your fine for illegally using your horn.

    • -1

What fine? Here is an extract from the road rules — horn can be used when:

"it is necessary to use the horn, or warning device, to warn other road users or animals of the approach or position of the vehicle"

      http://www6.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/legis/nsw/cons…
Clearly it is necessary to inform the doofus in front the position of all the other cars behind them. It shouldn't be necessary, but it is!

      • -1

Tell it to the magistrate. Plenty of articles stating that this is NOT an accepted reason. Google is your friend for articles specific to your state. I don't make the laws or the guidelines for enforcing them, and I won't be the one issuing the fine, so my opinion doesn't even matter. Downvoting just means others won't be warned though.

In Sydney, some lights change so fast from green to red that sometimes there is no other way but to be ready to go the sec it goes green (seriously theres lights that are green for 3-5 secs max). Honestly i dont know why more drivers dont have ESP, you can more often than not tell when your light will go green, when the others turn to red.

  • Coz. they are not following OZB so they are missing out on bargains… driving slow…

Go on then downvote. That's all this message board is good for. Why actually consider what is being posted when you can use the downvote button like you use your horn? Do I agree with this law? No. Will I obey it? Sure. It's the law. And I'm not made of money.

    https://www.goget.com.au/blog/is-it-illegal-to-honk-your-hor…

"NSW: In NSW, the illegal use of a horn carries a maximum $337 fine.
QLD: In Queensland the maximum fine is 20 penalty units. Currently, one penalty unit is $130.55, so it’s a maximum fine of $2611.
VIC: In Victoria the maximum fine is 1 penalty unit, currently $161.19.
TAS: Using your horn inappropriately in Tasmania could cost you $122.25.
SA: In South Australia the maximum fine is $298.
WA: In Western Australia the fine is one penalty unit, currently $50.
ACT: In Canberra the maximum fine is 20 penalty units. A penalty unit is currently $150, so it’s a whopping $3000 maximum fine!"

"A few situations it is illegal to use a horn include:

Beeping aggressively at drivers that have annoyed you,
Honking at pedestrians or cyclists when there is no risk of collision, and
A friendly beep to a passing friend."

Believe it or not, magistrates read the law, not Google, and certainly not GoGet! GoGet has some experience with the bending the rules - having previously been bankrupt, then phoenixing into it's current incarnation.

Police often get the law wrong too - a ticket doesn't mean you are guilty - they need to prove beyond reasonable doubt that this defence is untrue:
"it is necessary to use the horn, or warning device, to warn other road users or animals of the approach or position of the vehicle"

      http://www6.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/legis/nsw/cons…

Believe it or not, this isn't the only article on the topic, and GoGet actually took it form 7 News.

        https://7news.com.au/news/traffic/when-is-it-legal-to-use-yo…

Not good enough? How about a lawyer's site:

        https://www.sydneycriminallawyers.com.au/blog/when-is-it-ill…

"Examples of situations where it is an offence to use a vehicle’s horn include:

Honking to get another vehicle to start moving when your vehicle is stationary behind it, again when this is not to warn of an approach or your position."

Gee I wonder if I should trust a legal page set up by lawyers or some random on Ozbargain for my legal info. Decisions, decisions.

Not good enough? How about a quote from police?
        https://au.news.yahoo.com/using-car-horn-to-signal-people-is…

“A driver must only use their horns to warn others. If you use your horn, or any other warning device, for any other purpose you could receive a $161 fine,” police wrote.

How about Roads and Maritime NSW
        https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/lig…

"You must not use the horn or any other warning device unless:

You need to warn other road users that your vehicle is approaching
You need to warn animals to get off the road
The horn is being used as part of an anti-theft or alcohol interlock device fitted to your vehicle"

I'm not going to bother with any more but if you look you can find quotes from senior police responsible for enforcement.

Keep downvoting though. I hear if you downvote enough it creates a warp in the fabric of space time that alter reality. As a bonus, come back in a few weeks with a new post about whether you should fight a fine for illegally using your horn.

A PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHY OZBARGAIN'S ANON DOWNVOTING SYSTEM IS TRASH!

People won't see this because it is downvoted, not because it isn't true or useful, but because someone has decided they don't like it.

  • OMG. I just got honked by someone on the red to green sequence. I reckon i was half a second delayed on the light turning green to take off. Unbelievable. Especially since I claimed earlier to Monkee user that I’ve never been on honked even while driving a manual.

  • Try not to honk. If this was America, you might get shot at and killed.

  • How many second did you wait before you honk?

  • I noticed yes drivers are very slow when green light. I have seen many playing with their phones. This is a selfish act as cars behind will get red light.
