Xbox One S Running Really Slow

So my xbox one s, which is around 5 years old now, is running slow, real slow. It has been getting noticibly worse over the past few months.

Ive been playing sea of thieves and the load times are just getting crazy, were talking like 4-5 minutes just to load the level. I was playing online the other night and my console took a good 2-3 minutes longer to load a level than another xbox game i was playing online with, so thats a good comparison to show just how slow its getting.

I dont believe it is an SSD hdd and from my research you cant really defrag an xbox hdd? I have tried a few things such as full shutdown, clearing some cache thing, totally unplugging the power brick etc but none of them have helped.

Does any xbox'r here know any other potential solutions? I was thinking of maybe removing the hdd, plugging it into my pc, doing a full format and then putting it back into the xbox for a fresh start.

Another thought: if i plug an ssd hdd into the xbox, does it make much of a difference to load times?

How full is the HDD? When they are almost full, they behave exactly like this.

Sounds like Microsoft slowed down all Xbox Ones so you have to buy an Xbox Series X - Those rascals!

its a 900gb hdd and 300gb is free, so approx 65% has been used. Is that considered 'almost full'?

I also genuinely would not be surprised if Ms deliberately slowed down the console, still wouldn't make me buy the new one at launch prices though.

How would they be doing that?

I doubt they would do something like that. Apple did it with iPhones under the excuse of batteries and still got into trouble (deservingly). MS would have no excuse for doing so.
It would also be more widespread and quickly discovered if they did so.

I'm also genuinely would not be surprised if she leaves you with that attitude.

That said, you can do a full format on existing hard drive first, install games you want you play one at a time to see if access time improved.

I have an external HDD connected and there is a noticeable lag loading games and scenes. This won't help with your problem.

An external SSD might improve your situation.

how much dust is there on the console?
maybe it is overheating which can cause it to run slower than normal.

i'm no expert by any means, but had a similar issue with an older xbox 360 so i took it apart and found tons of dust inside, cleaned it up and it started to run smoother. the disc drive stopped working but i think that was because i broke something when taking it apart.

  • An SSD will improve loading times for games installed on it.

  • Didnt think of the dust being an issue, i might try that. Hopefully i dont stuff anything up if i open it up. Will attempt the format as well, its just a pain having to re-install all the games + updates. Interesting that an external hdd runs slower than the inbuilt one…
