Google TV or Vodafone TV Help Me Decide

Hi guys, I have an android TV and I absolutely love it. Now i am looking to make my Benq TK800m smart and would like an android box. Please suggest which one is better.

I use VPN and would like to be able to download APKs to watch free movies and TVs.

Budget is $100-$150

Thanks in advance..

  • Voda TV has an ethernet port, Google tv doesn't…

    • Ethernet can be added via an adapter.

      • Dongles!

        They're learning from Apple lol

Vodafone TV no longer for sale new from VF website

It also has DVB antenna port for free to air

  • I've had a Google TV for a week.

If you like Android TV don't make the mistake of thinking it's the same thing.

I love the Android TV interface (on my Sony TV) but I don't like the Google TV interface on the Chromecast anywhere near as much.

If you just want to install standalone apps like Kodi and VLC to watch media, I'd say no problem.

However, if the apps you have in mind integrate into Android TV's Live Channels app and homescreen channels then it will be a headache, they've been killed off.

I personally prefer the Google TV interface, allows me to look through the movie recommendations and if it's not on Netflix I'll request it so it's on my Plex. Just a nice interface to discover new content, for me at least.

  • The apps that I would like to install are Kodi, live tv net, cinema, cyber flex, Disney hotstar. And surfshark of course. Cheers guys!!

  • Definitely go Chromecast with Google TV to future proof yourself.

If you ever want to playback ripped 4K blu rays streamed over your local network then the google tv might not have the necessary processing power to do it.

    Mi box.

  • Although most would favour a VTV, since they're no longer available, if you're comfortable with PF'ing around with a Foxtel Now trial, a Foxtel Now Box is $59 + shipping (or wait for a free shipping deal if you can hold off). As far as I can tell, it does pretty much everything a VTV does.

I've read mixed reviews, but my experience with it has been pretty good. When I first fired it up it installed update(s), and then after it finished I did a factory reset, so whether that saved some headaches in the long run, I'm not sure, but it certainly didn't hurt.

Yes, after the Foxtel Now trial ends, you'll see a row of Foxtel channel thumbnails with lock symbols on the home screen, but it hasn't bothered me.

Another hurdle is Kodi, as last I checked it's blocked from installing. However, I got around it by installing WBMC instead.

  • Is there a way to do Optical output with Google TV?

Want a TV box with optical output for surround.

    • Does your TV not have optical output? Just have Chromecast do audio passthrough through HDMI and TV will output sound via optical to wherever it's going.

I tried ARC but my old FHD Samsung can't passthrough surround.

        • Is it a soundbar you have? Can you plug the chromecast straight into the soundbar for best audio? This summary might help a little.

          • @BeerCrisp: It is a blu-ray home theatre which only have HDMI output and Optical input.

I tried ARC with my old Chromecast no surround so I think will be the same with Google TV.

            • @superforever: I had the same config, Samsung TV with that 5.1 setup

Was a pita! Much easier when I used an XB1 as the media centre (optical and hdmi output) with a Logitech Harmony

I only have X360 which already have Netflix but they removed Amazon Prime app :(

Will see if any good cheap TV Box comes up.

                • @superforever: Time to upgrade to XB1? With the new one out, should be able to find some well priced used consoles

                  • @spackbace: At the moment, Amazon Prime I use the Samsung Smart TV App and Netflix use 360 App both can do surround through Optical.

I have ordered the Google TV if no need for good surround I will just keep it with TV optical out.

Just want to make is simple so that I don't need to turn all the switches to use difference output :)
