Upgrade from a iPhone 6s - XS or SE?

Hi all
I'm wanting to upgrade my wife's iPhone 6s and was thinking that either a new SE or a used/refurb XS is looking at the best bet in the $600-700 range. Just wondering on peoples thoughts and what would likely be the better option? Cameras seem similar, processor better on the SE but the XS maybe better in other ways? Of course, one would be brand new (thinking job hi-fi using disc gift cards is the best bet), the other second hand.
Thanks!

The XS is a superior phone, especially as Apple decided to gimp the SE by not giving it night mode (about the only thing of relevance to users that the A13 can do that the A12 does not). OLED screen, second camera, smaller bezels.

The SE is a glorified iPhone 8 with an A13 processor (with no night mode)

Whether that is worth the new vs second hand trade off is a personal decision. It is also possible that the SE will have longer support since the chip is 1 generation newer.

  • Just switched my 6s+ to a used XS last week. Don't regret it at all.

Having an OLED screen is the biggest difference (which the SE doesn't have). Otherwise, the upgrades on both are just incremental.

    • Can I ask what price you paid? (Inc HDD size)

      • Approx $646 all up.

Got it through this eBay Plus deal.

Here is the listing. I chose Good condition, 256gb, silver.
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-iPhone-XS-64GB-256GB-512GB…

Costs $679.99 after 15% discount. Then bought $670 of gift cards at 5% off here.

Exact amount paid was $636.5 for gift cards + $9.99 not on gift card = $646.49.

        • Wow, thanks for the detailed response! So $600 off someone for a 256gb off marketplace (looks like great condition) sounds okay then.

          • @JuryWheel: No worries!

Yes, that sounds like a good deal.

When you go inspect/pick up, check that Face ID works and the screen is truly an OLED.
I've seen people selling used iPhones with cheap 3rd party screens that have broken Face ID and are not OLED displays.

            • @bluegreen672: Ah, yep, I'll try and make sure I test that (might be a little tricky if it's already been reset I guess…) But the guys CLAIMS never repaired…the only thing that worried me a little was 86% battery health

  • XS has 3D touch which is far superior to haptic touch in newer iPhones.

  • I have the same phone. But i would personally update to the latest model. Sign up for some credit card bonus to get free vouchers.

  • SE supposedly has terrible battery life because the battery is the same size as the iPhone 8's battery but the CPU is more power hungry. I would go the XS because of that fact easily.
