Amaysim to sell mobile business to Optus

Mobile virtual network operator Amaysim announced on Monday morning it was selling its mobile business to its long-time network wholesaler, Optus. The Singaporean-owned telco will pay Amaysim AU$250 million to gain its customers.

Optus will keep the Amaysim brand intact and this deal will provide the certainty and backing Amaysim needs to power ahead and accelerate its growth in the MVNO segment. Amaysim shares closed last week at 67¢ and the company said the deal placed the value of the shares at between 67¢ and 73¢ per share.

    Not Surprised.
Soon the "I am an amaysim customer who is being switched to optus, find me a better deal" posts will start.

Amaysim has not really competed at the budget end for a while and it was very apparent their growth was slowing.
If Optus/SingTel does launch GOMO in Australia it could be a game changer (if they use the same model as they do in Asia)

  • Oh well, they can't make it any worse…

    • They will just become Optus customers
Amaysim has sold the customer list and will wind up their company once the transaction is completed

Wonder if my plan will remain $10

Was thinking about switching to their $10 per year plan.

    • if its like any of the previous buyouts like this.
They will honour the plan until it expires then you will have to switch to an Optus plan.

They are not buying Amaysim, they are buying their customer base. The Amaysim Business is being shut down.
They could also technically refund you pro rata and force you onto an Optus plan given its ONLY the customer list they have bought

Who is the go to carrier for us cheap people? I imagine Optus plan pricing sucks.

Look at Moose Mobile, they are the next cheapest :-)

  • that was quick, we were just sold from OVO to amaysim

Amaysim has served me well. Sad to see it go.

Likewise. Amaysim has been good. $10 month with zero issues for me. Lots of generous bonus’s over the last 6mths has been good too.

Can’t see the point of Optus paying for a customer base that is going to go elsewhere as soon as things progress / windup.

Managers in charge will say "look I met my targets of increasing subscribers! Please pay me my bonus" probably will be a disaster for shareholders.

Relevant thread from 2015 when they went listed on ASX. Not good for the investors unless you bought them over the last 12 months.

  • Aldi Mobile might be the new destination.

surprising to see Optus is forking out money to take back their customer, first they stopped the energy retailing then broadband and now it's gone for good.

  • No! No! I was sad to read this. Amaysim was is almost a full service operator! Their customer support was is excellent and they resolve queries on the chat without giving you 24-48 hours timelines. Really love their service and promptness. Never have they failed to impress me.

What does this mean to their customers? Cant we choose to stay with amaysim and their plans itself? What are the chances we'd be forced to move to Optus?

  • That's fantastic. It may eventually lead into better OS deals. I always swap SIMS into Amaysim.
As an Optus customer, they may begin to incorporate a much simpler system.

  • Amaysim also took over Jeenee Mobile, which was a good little telco, who used it's profit for people with a disability.
I also had Amaysim electricity for about 9 months. But they increased their daily connect charge, to a very high rate, so I left.
I ported my last Amaysim account to Circles.Life a few weeks back.
    Must have known something.
I hope this isn't the beginning of the end of MVNO's via Optus.
