Smart Lighting - Help Needed Please

Hey guys

I have smallish downright fittings throughout my house so I need to make sure of the bulbs I buy don’t hang out of the fitting

All of the bulbs are Phillips LEDs ranging from 5-7.5-9w as all these fit nicely inside my down lights.

I wanted to some smart lights but the problem was the Phillips hue bulbs were all so big they hung out of the fittings and looked stupid plus when you turned them on the light wasn’t contained in the downlight housing

So I got myself a LIFX Mini which being a little bigger then my Phillips led bulbs only hangs out a bit

Now I see these Phillips hue white extension bulbs, these ones -

They look the same as my Phillips led bulbs I already have in terms of shape and design but I can’t really tell the length size without putting them side by side with one of my Phillips led bulbs or my LIFX Mini bulb

I’ve been told that Phillips hue is better then LIFX due to using the bridge so you don’t congest your wifi or have drop outs etc but I never used them due to the size. But now I’m interested in these ones

Anyone able to help me out?

  • Are they downlights or are they bulbs. If they're removable bulbs, take it out and have a look at the bulb model/size.

If they're downlighrs, what you linked won't work

    • Sorry to confuse as I don’t know what my light fittings are correctly called but those bulbs I linked too is what I need

    • They're B22's

  • The lights you linked are gonna be the same size as the LIFX Mini.

You are correct on the Hue being better for people with bad wifi in their home.

You should take out a bulb that fits in your mount and show us so we can suggest what you want. I believe you're gonna cry though because someone installed a stupid light fitting in your house, which uses non-standard bulbs. You can buy them but you won't get them in smart bulb, currently.

A standard house light is E27 (edison screw), or B22 (bayonet). E14 is a smaller edison, and is called 'candle' because of the shape. It's used in small table lamps, and both Hue and LIFX have this bulb.

You probably need some low-wattage E27/B22 bulb. I know many of the cheaply made houses have the same issue, even the tiny CCFL lights were hanging out the bottom slightly.

    • The smaller Hue bulbs with flat bottom are 110mm, whereas the small LIFX models are 105mm. I think you're gonna need to suck it up that it's gonna hang a bit, unfortunately.

  • The A60 shape bulbs are traditionally 60mm x 110mm

    https://www.philips-hue.com/etc/philips/b2c/compareproducts.…

The ones you linked are 109mm long

  • So Phillips hue don’t make a smart bulb the same size or smaller then LIFX mini?

  • The hue bulbs I have look exactly the same as some of the Philips LED bulbs we still have. I can't tell them apart without reading the fine print.

We have a pretty large collection of Hue in our home now (and outside too). I don't think I'd like to be running this many wi-fi bulbs. The mesh network seems to work better when you have lots anyway :o)

    • Are you able to link a photo of your bulbs?

Never tried here, does that work?

So, Hue bulb has taller collar by the looks of it (white part), but the size and shape of the bulbs seems very close to the point of being indistinguishable to me. Hue weighs a little more.

        • Yer thanks for that mate

I’m told they don’t make these Phillips hue ones anymore?

          • @Twisty: There is a new edition, yeah. We have both colour and white bulbs - they were all the same size. I bought more of the old colour bulbs recently (Amazon UK), but I have not had any of the new ones.

  • Is this the same with Phillips Hue?

My LIFX mini remembers it’s settings as in brightness etc even if I turn it off at the wall switch so it can be used as a normal light and still remember it’s settings

Also when turned on at wall switch there is a slight delay in the bulb coming on compared to a conventional led bulb. Does Phillips hue have this delay too?

    • You can set the hue to be as per last setting or completely different settings when it powers off.

No delay for manual power on and off and works like normal..using the hue switch there may be a bit of a delay but they fade in/out so it's ok

      • So no delay at all from wall switch when turning on? In other words instant on like a normal conventional led bulb? My LIFX mini has a slight delay and I was thinking that all smart bulbs would be the same

        • can confirm the hue light reponse almost instantaneously, unless you use the app to turn it on/off. And you can customise settings to whatever you like when bulb is powered on (remember last settings, back to default yellowish brightness, etc)

          • @lgacb08: Hmmm maybe I should make the move to Phillips hue from LIFX

When I ask Apple Siri to turn on LIFX bulb is very very fast. Is this the same with Phillips hue ?

When I was using google to turn on LIFX, it was slower then what Apple Siri did it in

        • I can also confirm instant response from the wall switch.

I have some lights programmed to do different things when they come on after being switched off (just in case of a power outage, where I don't want bedroom lights coming on full brightness when power is restored). You can set them up how you want. By default, they come on at full brightness immediately when power is supplied.

Dimmer switch activation can be a little shaky in my home at times, but mostly works ok (eg, for some reason the strip LED on my son's bed sometimes doesn't respond…I suspect that some of the other electronics nested around the control unit may be causing issues). Where it works, it's fairly well instantaneous. The app on my iOS devices also works very smoothly (ie…adjusting brightness in real time has very little lag). I guess I'm trying to say that, at its best, it is seamless. YMMV.

          • @Banj0: Thanks I’m gonna go pick up a hue white kit
