Cheap Longest Lasting SIM

Hey all, I've been thinking about having a separate phone number for only multi factor authentication and confirmation stuff so that my usual number that has data and used for phone calls doesn't have anything critical on it.

I imagine it could be something along the line of buying a starter sim, activate the number, but not selecting a plan so the number is alive as long as the credit is there and only recharge as needed to keep the number alive.

Has anyone tried doing something similar and how feasible is this while keeping the cost very low? What's the best mobile carrier that can help me with this?

  • Most prepaid sims should do the job for you. Start with $2 Vodafone, Optus, or ALDI mobile.

    • Thanks mate! I'll look into that

I've been keeping a number active with Amaysim. The pay as you go credit has a 365 day expiry so I just top it up with $10 after it has expired.

I'm not sure if it is the cheapest way but I think $10/year is pretty good and saves me from having to look around for deals!

Bonus you get to pick your own number :)

    • Hmm I'm not too fussed about picking the number, but I suppose it's not a bad thing since I can just pick an easy to remember number and then port it out later to other provider with cheaper cost. Thanks!

I've been doing this while living overseas for a few years. I use Aldi.
PAYG credit lasts for one year. This means $5 for the first year, but min recharge after that is $15

In my case I have the extra benefit of being able to easily convert that money into a useful data plan when I am in Aus (PAYG credit can be used to pay for monthly packs)
