CPU Temperature Too High (Ryzen 5 2600)

Just popped in a 2600 on my B350 and the temperature reaching 49 - 50 degrees when i start a game. Screen went black once.
I'm sure I put enough thermal. Any ideas?

50C is normal temprature just above idle temps.

Start worrying if you get close to 100 but even then nothing will happen other than the speed will be throttled.

    • Good that's a relief i thought I fried the thing. Good i got it used and was training myself on how to install a CPU as im looking to build my first PC with the latest gen Ryzen

  • You could get a better heatsink if you want it to make less fan sound under load. But 50 is quite cool isn't it for a CPU under load?

    • ^^ This and above, 50c from a 2600 under load is quite normal.
You could try a re-seat, clean, check all cables as while you have been working previously, it's easy to dislodge power.

    • I think it was too much thermal paste. My 1st CPU installation so freaked out.

      • You don't need a lot of thermal paste. It's only needed cause at a microscopic level the metal isn't a flat surface & you don't want air pockets forming.
That being said, when you put the heatsink on the excess paste would have been squeezed out the sides.

  • 50c is fine, if it went above 75 i would be worried for its lifespan, it can technically goto 90 without failure, but the hotter it gets over time, the shorter lifespan it will have.

    • Yeh it went 50 degrees then screen turned black so I assumed it overheated.

      • Maybe you need to update your GPU firmware. Or try another hdmi cable.

  • Are the fans on your graphics card working ok? How about temps on the gfx card? I use HWMonitor to check.

  • Seems quite cool

  • Have you checked for a bios update for your motherboard?

    • Bios is latest i think its paste going everywhere

  • sure I put enough thermal

Too much thermal paste is actually bad for heat transfer. You only need about a pea size spread.

    • I put a lot and it went everywhere even some in socket. Also had new 3200mhz installed but it was running at 2666 so went bios and enabled xmp profile at 3200 now it gave me a blue stop code so turned that off. All types of stupid running this morning.

    • Thermal paste isn't that rigid to increase the distance between the CPU and cooler by putting too much. Putting more is better than less, just don't over do it.

  • What thermal paste did you use?

If your screen turns black when launching a 3d game it's a good chance your graphics card is the cause of it. You can start by completely uninstalling any drivers or software that interfaces with your GPU (like MSI Afterburner) and then reinstalling the latest version from Nvidia or AMD.

Don't let windows install the driver for you through Win Update. It sometimes grabs the older versions.

It's also possible that your GPU might need a look at, if it's old (4-5yr) it might need some new paste.

  • M8, 50 is actually pretty good, especially if you're gaming. Don't worry

what cpu cooler have u got?
    download the latest gpu driver & ddu & cpu-z & gpu-z & speccy
boot up in safe mode for ddu to uninstall gpu driver
boot normally once done & install latest gpu driver
and run your favourite stress test for a short while
did it go black? did it go blue? what were the temps?
did it say anything in eventviewer? if it went black or blue

  • Sounds like either power or software. Could be gpu, ram or mb but less likely. If it's one off or only one game don't worry about it.
As others have suggested dl sysinternals process explorer, nirsoft event viewer, hwinfo64.
Make sure you get latest drivers from AMD or NVIDIA website.
If on win 10 add a registry entry for graphic driver response time before crash (trdelay or something like that). Change it from the one second default to 8secs.
If you have uefi instead of bios you may have a motherboard program that monitors power consumption viewable from the OS.
