ANDROID. Looking for a robust smart watch for my wife. Not interested in the fitness side, mainly the phone functionality.
Just so she doesn't have to lug her phone around all the time. Using it for payments would also be used ( not atm with her phone)
Obviously value for money as OZB.

Exactly this. A smart watch is a luxury - doesn't really add much functionality besides some of the fitness functions, the rest is mostly a gimmick. If you only care about copying phone functionality then it's an even worse value proposition. Just keep the phone.
Lugging a phone around? Does she have a DynaTAC 8000x ??

No, but i got her a case/wallet cover thing for it and she carries everything in that now. Then palms if off to me too carry.

If she does not want to use the fitness functions then there really is no VFM argument to be made as you are just paying to emulate a couple of functions the phone already does, whether the watch is convenient is subjective.
Your only option would be an esim capable Galaxy Watch or Apple Watch if carrying a phone around is difficult. However, you also need to remember the watch is yet another device to ensure is charged ready to go the next morning.
