Canberra to Brisbane Road Trip - Accommodation and What to See?

Hello OzB.

We are planning a road trip between Canberra and Brisbane. We are 6 adults + 2 kids (age 2) with 2 SUV's and 3 drivers. Plan is to stay overnight in Forster, NSW. This is our first time to Brisbane/Gold Coast.

Hoping to get some suggestions, tips and advices regarding the following.

Places for cheaper accommodation
Must see places between Canberra, Brisbane and Gold Coast
Also tips to keep the kids entertained (as it is their first long drive)

Thank you

  • Are ppl in Canberra allowed to Queensland?

Yes, plus from 3rd November, Forster isn't regarded by QLD as a Covid hot spot

      • Forster isn't regarded by NSW as a hot spot

    • yes as per their website. Just need to take a border pass. Plan is to go there in December.

Go see the hinterland, much more interesting than the usual gold coast tourist rubbish. If you can get a boat over to straddie you'll also get away from a lot of beach crowds. We have passes to all the parks, and my little one still prefers the forest and beach than those.

  • Do your research on petrol prices, as it varies wildly on that route…. kids love the smell of petrol :)
What’s your time scale for trip…. and really consider the inland route for one of the ways…. that back road via Cowra is great.

    • No research about petrol yet. This trip is in December. Timescale is 6 days.
Thank you I will check the cowra route.

Stop at the big banana. Kids will enjoy watching the confectioners stretch out the sugar gloop to make the little hard candies.

Just don’t stop for fuel or food in Sydney

1 night in Forster? You won’t have a lot of time to explore. Canberra to Forster, then to Brisbane will fill up most of your day driving leaving not a lot of time for sightseeing on the way especially if you are taking time out for lunch.

It’s also hard to recommend sight seeing opportunities without knowing what you like. Could recommend a bunch of ‘tourist stuff’ like big banana and find you only want to see beaches or not spend any money. Personally I like stopping at lookouts etc for a picnic.

Edit: 6 days isn’t a lot of time to cover a lot of distance.
