Parcel Forwarding from US to Australia

Hey OzB community,

I'm a parcel forwarding n00b so excuse my questions. Would like to buy a wedding dress from the US during the Black Friday sale and have it shipped here. I've been doing some research based on the Wiki but couldn't find any current discussion threads on some of the parcel forwarding services.

Is anyone able to share their recent experiences? I've read that UsToOz is no longer reliable and have read conflicting reports on MyUs and Shipito. Has anyone had experience with Stackry or ShopMate? How do they compare?

Would appreciate any guidance you can provide. Thank you :)

I’ve used myus and the myus personal shopper and never had any problems. The personal shopper is good for stores that won’t accept au credit cards in the us version of the website.

I've used Planet Express about a dozen times without any issues over the past 2-3 years. Really happy with the service. I've tried the most budget version of shipping (slow, but no problem) through to the fast shipping options. All good. I can't remember if I first read about Planet Express on OzBargain or on Whirlpool, but I'm super glad I found it.

    • Old crazy genius scientist boss, excellent pilot but suffers from depth perception, and they do use robot help.

Planet express, it's a quality delivery company :)

+1 for Planet Express. Using them for a few years now. Last delivery was in July using their cheapest shipping option and it took about 5 weeks.

I've used both Shipito & Myus. Shipito I used quite a few years ago and was good during that period of time, only hassle was the account setup as it required a notary public to sign the paperwork, not sure if that is still the case. More recently I use Myus because it was easy to setup the account and pricing was ok. Only drama with Myus recently was that the receipting and consolidating of orders took 3 odd weeks due to COVID rather than a few days. Apart from that I have found them pretty good overall.

Unfortunately they all charge GST now so they are rarely worth the effort unless the item is rare or non-existent here.

    • GST on the parcel or the forwarding service?

GST on the forwarding service AND the value of the package. It means if you paid tax on the source item then you are now being double taxed.

I haven't used mine much since they all started applying GST…so you are often paying USA state sales tax then Australian GST on top PLUS courier fees.

That being said…I did use MyUS about 12 months ago for a rare item i couldn't get here. GST and postage cost me as much as the item though.
    No problems then.

Prior to that I used ShipItTo and they were great. Only reason I switched to MyUS at the time was their shipping rates were cheaper but not sure if that is still the case.

Both of these have pretty long track records (e.g. I think both been around 10+ years).

I'd be cautious of trying out any players without long track records….can't remember who the crowd was but one went bankrupt and everyone's parcels who were in storage were seized and sold to pay off creditors!!!!

    • How is seizing other people's property to pay off an unrelated party's debts not theft of the highest order? How can that be legal?

EDT: Seriously. If you bought a $1000 item and paid $50 to have it shipped but it was sold for $400 so you lose $1000 but the shipping company gains $450 (didn't have to ship it) and some ashoel gets the expensive item for $600 less. This makes me mad. I don't see how they can be given ownership of property that isn't theirs.

      • Yes, not sure how it was legal but perhaps they have technical ownership given the packages are addressed to their premises? Or maybe it was just a case of “good luck fighting us for your package from another legal jurisdiction”?

    • Thanks for the advise! I've noticed a couple have warehouses in states with 0% sales tax so was hoping to utilise that. Hoping the savings in sales tax will pay for postage but I'll need to do a bit more research on that.

I’m taking back my MyUS recommendation. Just had a nightmare scenario with them where they started charging a monthly membership fee to my credit card with ZERO notification and then they refused to refund me despite the account being inactive. On top of that there doesn’t seem to be a way to remove a payment method on your account so you are forced to have a payment method there. Would never use again.

  • For anyone interested, I went with Planet Express and was happy with the service. Fast delivery with FedEx. Arrived in about 5 business days from Oregon.

    Thanks for all the recommendations!

  • Thank you guys for your recommendation. I gonna try Planet Express now
