PS5 TV - Which One Should I Buy (Budget $10K)

PS5 is in transit for next week.

I have the room for practically any TV and permission on the budget up to $10k

I could get the TCL 100p715 for ~$9500 - Seen one today its huge but only HDMI 2.0

Or the Samsung Samsung Q80T 85 for ~$4950 which appears to be the biggest HDMI 2.1 TV but is "only" 85 inchs

Or wait until next year, will there be more larger HDMI 2.1 TV's next year?

While the budget is generous that's it for this decade…

  • You should check info about "input lag" on each TV before you buy it.
Gaming with a 80ms input lag will surely give a lot of frustration for you.

    • Sorry which one has 80ms? Cant seem to see much on TCL as they have different models here vs USA etc

Article here on Rtings as to the best TV for PS5's - https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/ps5#:~:text=Best%20OL….

TL;DR - OLED TV (LG) for the win yet again

    • It is only 77", the room/wall is large enough for a 150' projector, it is a very dark proper media room with only one frosted glass door to the outside

      • +1

But it is the best TV you can get atm. Do you value size or picture quality more?

If you need a bigger TV and want the best quality I would hold out until next year and hope something better comes out

        • I think my issue is will I regret the lack of HDMI 2.1 on the TCL vs the Samsung Q80T or regret not going bigger

OLED is the best screen I agree, but the 88" is $60k. I would settle for this size but the price is way above budget.

I will probably wait and see and play on the old 55" Samsung LCD/LED std HD or even my 12 year old 50" Panasonic plasma which is great on HDMI

  • Samsung q800t is 8k and appears to have HDMI 2.1 support. Goes up to 82 inch.

Alternatively have you considered getting the 100inch TCL for your cinema room and then a smaller but more gaming focussed tv to put elsewhere?

  • I have […] permission on the budget up to $10k

Have a serious think about whether you expect the TV you purchase will really last you a decade?

There will be a PS5 Pro in a few years, then a PS6 a few years after that (or perhaps the next gen will be all cloud gaming). There will be further advancements in HDMI, 2.2, 3.0, 3.x, etc, with more features we can't even imagine right now. Spend $10k on a 100" 4K TV now and in 5 years you'll be lusting over that 120" 8K Mini-LED

My recommendation would be to spend half your budget at a maximum, especially if you are intending to finance this purchase (and the TV will depreciate faster than you can pay it off). And yes, wait for 2021 models for better and more widespread implementation of HDMI 2.1, or grab a runout 2020 model at a bargain price.

You may not get the mega size TV you are dreaming off, but at the end of the day you'll enjoy playing the PS5 on any decent TV.

I spent more than one evening in a bar with the head of Sony Engineering's UK factory in Wales meany years ago, yes the design life of their TV's was an expected 10 years.

Also my Panasonic, first of the full HD Plasma's, doubles as a heater and insanely heavy, while having a very soft picture via tuner on FTA still looks very good on HDMI with current Playstation 3 & 4 and is 13 years old

I get what you are saying. Just this year I sold my owned-since-new 2006 Panasonic 480P SD Plasma (with analogue-only tuner and one HDMI port) and replaced it with a 2019 Sony X950G 65" that I picked up on runout for $1800. Pre-ordered a PS5 for release day and it looks awesome on this new TV.

I have a 50" 720P Pana Plasma that is still going strong and have just given it a new life with a Chromecast with Google TV plugged into it. I played PS4 on that TV, but it seems pointless to play PS5 on it and miss out on enjoying 4K.

Having said that, these are dumb TVs, manufactured by Panasonic, with what was a very good (and still well respected) display technology. Personally I couldn't imagine spending $10K on a (Chinese) LCD and expect it to (1) not be superseded by vastly better display tech within 5 years, and (2) not die inside of 10 years.

  • I understand that the heart wants what the heart wants. But objectively, the models available these days are just not ready for HDMI 2.1 , there is always a trade off.

The other things to note is, at the cutting edge of the high end, buyers remorse comes knocking pretty fast. If you are paying 3k today, in three years your TV specs might be available for 1.5k, not the end of the world. If you're paying 10k today, in three years that TV will be 4-6k. That's car like depreciation. (with no resale possible)

If I were you with this budget to blow, I'd look at a hybrid option. Mount a cheapish 75" on the wall for gaming, setup a pulldown projector screen in front of it and get a BenQ W2700 for epic movie watching.

With the TV, I wouldn't stress about HDMI 2.1 yet, just get something with decent motion handling (120hz panel). You can spend 5k on this entire setup, and you'll be happy for a few years. After the few years, you can spend the other 5k on a 85"+ TV and it will get something very decent by then.

I see this viewpoint a lot but don't really understand it, yes something may be cheaper in the future but you have the use now, and there will be another TV that is $10k, if you want the performance you have to pay for it, if you want to pay for the 1% product its not 10% more its 50% more.

To me, it comes down to opportunity cost. If I can buy 90% of the experience for 50% of the money, it's a no brainer for me. I can spend the other 50% on another product and get more value for my money.

We've (we being people holding that point of view) all splurged on items before and had buyers remorse. Example, many (not all) people who buy new cars and try to flip it a year later understand that some decisions don't age well. And some people are in a well off financial position to not even notice. We are from the first group.

All I'm doing is suggesting an alternative that is better value for money, this is Ozbargain after all. In the end, you should do what makes you happy.

  • At 10k A$ I would look at OLED.

    • OLED

      77 is too small

      88 is out of budget

  • Or wait until next year, will there be more larger HDMI 2.1 TV's next year?

Wait. HDMI 2.1 has not saturated the market yet. A lot of TV's, even high end models, are missing it. Do NOT buy a TV without it if gaming is even remotely important to you.

Don’t finance a TV. Wait for Xmas there will lots of deals on offer.

Hold off a wee bit longer if you can. Price and release date announcement is imminent for the LG CineBeam HU810P.

For <$10K you could have what is anticipated to be the best short-throw laser projector ever made plus a motorised 120" screen…and with a could of grand spare change.

  • i would totally hold off… in the same boat. happy to play ps5 on the same 75" tv thats served me through the PS4 generation. these next-gen consoles are barely out, its gonna take til Q1/Q2 next year before anythings remotely dialed in for these things… and longer for them to spread the market and offer value.

also, theres no killer apps on these consoles yet either…

  • 65 inch C9 OLED or similar. Don't sped 10k

My Amazon launch day ordered PS5 has shipped, from Perth???? To Sydney

    • +1

Yep, mine’s coming from WA too and won’t arrive til next Wednesday…I sent a message to Amazon customer service to complain and they gave me a $30 credit for the delay.

      10:33 PM
Package arrived at a carrier facility
      Welshpool Wa, WA

Nice, I sent a note, polite but disappointed that my games had arrived but not my console and got "I can confirm shipment…sorry for the confusion…enjoy your PS5"

        Ah well

        • No worries, better luck next time!

Funny thing…This evening I changed the payment method on a preorder to add a new credit card and I didn’t realise that it automatically used the $30 onto the preorder so I thought it disappeared and I replied the customer service email that the $30 disappeared and they sent me another $30.

Later I realised what happened with the preorder so I got $60 credited all up. 😬

  • Got the Samsung QA85Q80TAWXXY 85" Q80T 4K UHD SMART QLED TV vis Good Guys eBay for ~$4300

Will have to do size wise until some larger TV’s have HDMI2.1
