How can I get Duty & GST refund - Returning Online Purchase from International Vendor (Jomashop)

Does anyone have experience getting Duty & GST refund when returning purchase to an international vendor?

  • I purchased something on Jomashop over $1,000.
  • I paid Duty, GST, and Aust Gov Charges to DHL who handled my delivery, and the goods was delivered to me.
  • Now under Jomashop's return policy, I am able to return the product.
  • My question is: Does anyone know how I can get Duty & GST back?
  • Note: I do not think Jomashop has a Australian Business Number, therefore they don't pay GST. So the GST I paid went straight to ATO/ABF. I called ABF, who advised me to claim my duty back under Duty Drawback Scheme. Is it correct? I was also advised that the Duty Drawback Scheme does not cover GST. So where can I get my GST (a bigger chunk of money) back in this case? ATO or ABF?

Thanks everyone for reading, and please share your experience. Much appreciated.

I would start here, as these are the people you 'paid'. Note at best you'll get the duty/GST back, those fees to DHL are long gone.

    • Thanks. Very helpful. Seems Form 653 (for GST) goes together with Duty Drawback Scheme (for duty).

I guess the process is initiating the return with Jomashop first, then apply Form 653 and Duty Drawback Scheme?

May I ask if you have you tried this yourself?

    Thanks for your reply.
The fees to DHL for reimbursement are only $22, so I do not expect to get that back as DHL has done their job to handle the import.
