Oppo A52/A72 Vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 9/Pro

Hey Guys,

Looking on getting a new phone. I've checked the "Best Budget Smartphone (Under $300) in 2020" forum and done my own research and I've came down to the

Oppo A52 (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/oppo-a52-64gb-twilight-black-op…)
and
Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/xiaomi-redmi-note-9-64gb-onyx-b…)

I also had the Motorola G9 Play (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-g9-play-64gb-ele…) as an option but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't compare to the other 2 (do suggest if I'm wrong) even though it does come with free wireless earbuds.

Price including delivery is fine for both as they both come under my $300 budget. I'm looking for a phone just for regular use and I won't be using for hardcore gaming or anything like that. I mainly value battery life, NFC (they both have), camera and maybe cool/interesting features (the Redmi has IR sensor, not important but cool).

Just needed the OzBargainers suggestion before sticking with one. Cheers!

EDIT 15/11/2020: I was also thinking of getting the Optus Oppo A72 (https://www.optus.com.au/prepaid/phones/oppo/a72) for $279 (Originally $299 but they have $20 off) and then unlocking it. My friend is a long-time Optus customer and using his details I could chat with them and ask them to unlock it for free.

EDIT 17/11/2020: I will be going ahead with the Oppo A72. Slightly better than A52 and cheaper. The I'll get it unlocked.

Should add an “Other” option in your poll.

Xiaomi will provide regular software updates for at least a couple of years.
Aside from Pixel phones they'd have to be close to the top for software support.
Oppo typically provide one, maybe two updates in the first year then you're forgotten.

I only have experience with the A52, but that has been very positive. I bought mine 3 weeks ago when on special at JB for $249. I came from an iPhone 6s+ that was given to my daughter to replace her “lost” 6s+ (that we found a week ago wedged in between her mattress and bed base 😩) and with a mortgage and 2 kids I couldn’t justify anything more than a $300 phone at this time, right before Xmas etc.

Did my research here, like yourself, and watched a fair few reviews. The main thing that swayed me was being able to buy at bricks and mortar.

I find the phone absolutely fantastic value for money. I spent a fair bit of time converting ecosystems, but after that I’m continually impressed with the value for money. The only downside was the camera. I must admit to feeling a tad disappointed that photos were nowhere near the quality of the iPhone, I wasn’t surprised as most reviews said the camera performance was “acceptable”, just disappointed as I take a lot of photos. However, after installing GCam, the photos I am taking now surpass any of my best shots taken with the 6s+, the difference between the stock camera and GCam is night and day. The portrait mode is stunning, if that’s your thing. Outside shots are beautiful and indoor quality is good. Night mode does well, considering the price. Video quality is also good.

I am getting 1.5 days out of a charge, and that is with punishing the battery as you do when you have a new phone. I dare say I will be getting 2 days once the novelty wears off.

I’m conscious of the security updates tailing off and will be something I will be assessing as time goes on.

For $250, I’m stoked. Absolutely stoked. I bought a $12 case on eBay that is very reasonable quality, although it does come with a case and screen protector.

My other daughter has the A9 2020, which is also a very good phone for $350. I haven’t looked at the A53 closely but that may be an option too.

  • Anyone with the Redmi 9 know of a good working app for led SMS notifications? Tried notifybuddy but it didn't work on mine.

And is there a logical reason why the standard txt notifications don't work all the time?

    • Where did you purchase yours from?
For the led SMS, try this - https://c.mi.com/thread-3115312-1-0.html

      • Got it from HK, Toby's deals I think. Tried that notifybuddy, didn't work at all.

    • Xiaomi 's battery apps love to shut everything down on sleep to save battery

Thats the upside, and yours is the downside

      • Probably right … PITA.

        • My Mi A3 on the other hand is flashing the notification light all the time

          • @[Deactivated]: Don't really want to spend that much just for led notifications.

            • @JH100: YOU can use the AMOLED edge screen apps to light up the whote screen or the edge on notification.

I may be able to help

              • @[Deactivated]: Thanks but I can't get google play to find anything, at all. I am trying NotifyBuddy again and remembered from last time I needed an installer and got APKPure to install NBuddy but can't get NBuddy to download - been at it for an hour now, says DLing but not happening.

Having to use Chrome to get anything. And happening upon solutions by chance, with some basic computing logic.

Wouldn't know where to start with AMOLED edge screen apps.

So you see, almost pure novice here and wouldn't want to put anyone through it.

                • @JH100: OK, since I hijacked this thread I should at least update my contribution.

Eventually got a version of NotifyBuddy that works on the RN9. Version 1.2, the first I think. Had to load it from computer since it wasn't downloading on the phone for some reason. All good now anyway, for now.

  • YOu can do better than those two mobiles at the same price, check the classifieds on OZbargains

    even with yours truly :P
