  • I don't think it is wise to get this done the cheapest way possible. You might want to mention where you live and you may find someone from your area who knows a reputable person for you that might give you a good deal.

You are changing your whole carpet to timber and this is the place where you will live.

  • My dad is flooring his whole house now and unfortunately i have volunteered to help. It's a pain in the bloody back. All the cutting work is just annoying. My back and my hands are just killing me. Hope you find someone. Cheaper isn't always good. There is a lot of work involved into this. Luckily my dad is a retired carpenter with 30+ years experience.

  • Yeah did the flooring for a 2 BR unit and my garage last year (converting the garage into a granny flat). Not the actual solid timber floor but those engineered veneer boards. Still, cutting sucks, as our 2 BR unit has odd shaped corridor. First time doing this and it took us hours to cut & sand the flooring boards into the correct shape for the corners. Tried to save a some money because the quote we got from DecoRug was quite expensive.

Then my friends lived in Hurstville just got some Chinese tradesmen from local newspaper to do up the floor for their flat. Much better job than mine and a lot cheaper than what DecoRug quoted me as well.

Moral of the story — check the classifier section of local Chinese newspaper and call up a few.

    • yeah, thats what i need, chinese tradesman to install this timber flooring. to remove the carpet is easy, i did it by my self 5 years ago, before installing the new carpet. but to install timber floor, it is a different story, prefer hire tradesman.

  • what is the auction place you bought your timbers?

  • oh wow sounds good,

I'm thinking of changing floor covering on an apartment on a really tight budget.

Any thoughts on Ikea flooring particularly this one:

    http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/20144880/

    only $10/m2….. crazy prices.

    • +1

There are so many different kinds of floor coverings and varied quality as well. Even solid timber flooring has different price for different types of wood/thickness/etc.

As of that IKEA SLÄTTEN — 6mm and laminated top. I guess "okay" if you are doing an investment property that you are looking at re-doing the floor a few years down the track.

      • ahh thanks scotty, just trying to get any advice possible, really have no idea.

But i'm prepared to roughen my soft office keyboard hands.

        • Yeah I had completely no idea either until last year when I had to go through a major renovation of my house + an IP. My wife was trying to "save some money" so decided to do some of the "easier tasks" ourselves. Turns out "easy" is all relative…

    • i don't recommend for laminate, as i have seen my friend neighbour, his neighbor place got flood and the landlord just installed laminate timber floor 1 week before the flood. at the end the landlord had to install a another one.
