Need Help, PC Blackscreen When Boot

Hi guys, I need some advise please.

My gaming pc was playing up. Out of the blue the screen just turn black saying no signal, while the pc is still running.

I tried reset it, the bios screen run normal but when it supposed to show Window sign in, the screen turned black again.

I thought it could be software issue, so I reinstalled Window from usb. Worked fine, loaded up, set up and then again the screen went dark with no signal while pc still running.

So I thought it could be gpu this time. Since I have no spare part to test it out, I tried to set in bios to use igpu to boot. I plugged dp cable into the motherboard dp socket but now there was no bios screen, just complete dark while pc still running.

I am lost now. Please help me. Thank you.

Pc spec:
4590k, asus z97-a, 8x2gb, gigabyte gtx 970, corsair 650W.

  • Had a similar issue a few months ago. Turns out the heatsink on the CPU wasn't spread properly, and this was causing a failure on the motherboard. What error LED's do you see on the motherboard?

    • Im not sure. But mine cpu temp was fine the whole time, hoover around 37.

  • Next time there is a black screen, take the monitor cable out from the GPU and plug it into another input on the GPU while the PC is still running. Might be the GPU switching the default input.

    • I did that too. Tried all 3 dp ports on gpu but to no avail, unfortunately. Right now I tried to figure how to change the bios setting from igpu back to dgpu but since I can’t enter bios screen anymore. :(

      • can you plug it into the onboard display? might be a GPU issue?

        • I tried igpu socket and change setting in bios from dgpu to igpu. Now I got nothing not even bios screen when turn on. But the pc still running just no display at all no matter which dp port I plug in. May be need to reset mobo?

  • A couple of steps in troubleshooting.
    1) When the PC boots up do your hear any beep sounds? If the POST isn't normal check then its Hardwar issue.
    2) If NORMAL POST(Power On Self Test) then Try connecting the display port to a different monitor.
    3) Also WHY not check the Display cable PINS( DVI/VGA). if you are using HDMI this worth borrowing with some one who has one for testing and give it a try.
    4) If all of the above are okay, Then inbuilt Display card or add on card to be changed and checked
    5) If HDMI doesn't work try a DVI/ VGA port if any on your mother board.

Since other good friends here have already responded to few trouble shoots try a different Monitor or connect to your TV.

    • Thanks for your input.

1). There was no beep when turn on. Since I set bios to igpu, there was no POST just black screen but before that, when using dgpu, it has I assumed since I see the F2 or Del to enter bios screen.

2-5). Thanks for suggestion. Will look into that. But since i was able to reinstall window, I was assuming dp cable and monitor was fine.

But right now, how can I switch back from igpu setting to dgpu? Since I get no display at all when turn on. Will resetting mobo help? Thanks

      • +1

As far as I'm aware it will default to DGPU if it's plugged in. Have you tried plugging back into that?

Otherwise you can try unplugged the DGPU completely and see if you get picture on the integrated. Or, clearing the CMOS should reset to defaults so it will default to DPGU (if plugged in - otherwise integrated GPU.

        • Thank you. I tried plugging back to dgpu but no display on screen. Will clearing CMOS. Thanks for the input!

      • So with Windows installed have you tried F8 key,

        1) Enable debugging

        2) Enable boot logging

        3) Enable low-resolution video

        4) Enable Safe Mode

        5) Enable Safe Mode with Networking

        6) Enable Safe Mode With Command Prompt

        7) Disable driver signature enforcement

        8) Disable early launch anti-malware protection

        9) Disable automatic restart after failure

        ***** 3) Enable low-resolution video give that a try

        Press F10 for more options
Press Enter to return to your operating system

        • Thank you will try this out.

  • Could be a hardware fault but it also could be software/driver fault.

Can you see the screen when booting into bios through the GPU? It's dangerous to assume, even though you said you reinstalled Windows.

    • Thank you for ur input! I see the “press F2 or del to enter bios” when start using dgpu and when it should load the window10 sign in, suddenly monitor showed no signal from pc while it is still running. Kb and mouse still works, i press window+crtl+shift B to wake screen, here a beep but no display. So I assume window is running fine, dp and monitor should work too. So suspect is gpu to me.

      • But you don't see that "press F2" when the you run the DP cable from the video card?

    8 x 2GB sticks! :)

Pretty much any individual part failing can cause issues,

which temps were you seeing 37 for? I'd still check the thermal paste if you have some to reapply. Ivy Bridge/Haswell/Devils Canyon all have issues with temps, and this can cause the paste between the spreader and fan to dry out. If you don't have paste, leave it to last to check. If you do, it probably can do with a renewal at this age anyway.

I'd try booting off just 1 of the RAM sticks, and leave the GPU out if you can get back to bios without it. The trick with troubleshooting is to strip back down to minimal connections and then re-add things one at a time to see what could be wrong. If you have any extra connections (CD Drive).

Apparently the z97-a has a number of issues with heat spreaders. May be worth a look through Tom's Hardware after you troubleshoot the normal issues: Example thread https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/asus-z97-a-issues-no…

Edit: Forgot to add about boot media: chance your HDD is dying (as there is a chance of everything else) Really hard to tell without more info but try disconnecting HDDs and see if it boots to bios.

    • Thank you for ur input. I applied thermal paste on cpu during winter. 37c I saw from spec app. Eliminating faulty parts are indeed toublesome here as I dont have spare to swap and try each one out too.

Will try you method. But now I need at least to swap back from igpu setting to dgpu to access to bios part cos atm I see only darkness :(

Ssd is my main drive. Last I check, via samsung magic app, it was not faulty but who knows! Will try it out too thanks.

  • Thank you everyone for answer. I found the culprit. It was the dp cable. Switching to hdmi and my pc works.

I bought the Ugreen branded dp cable from Ali thinking it should be better quality for the uncertified. Digging around on internet seems like many has problems with uncertified dp cable flickering, black screen, etc. too. So will now look for the certified one, albeit it is quite pricey.
