Samsung Sound Bar - Q60r Vs T650?

Hi all,

After a soundbar for my Dad's birthday as he's never had one. Know nothing about the field but tested a few on demo at jb hi fi over lunch. Q60r is $799 no discounts currently but the series 6 HW-T650 is $399 after a $200 discount on JB's website (and seems other retailers). They currently use TV speakers, and have been for the last part of the decade since my dad's old school large bass/amplifier/speaker setups.

Anyone tried either or better still both and have any recommendations? The t650 only does 3.1 whereas the q60r has the ability to add the extra back speakers for a priec ($180'ish in jb). The issue is my parents have a medium/small open living, so the dining table is behind the couches and the alfresco is on the left hand side - so the idea of cables running behind seems abit unlikely/messy for them (i'm presuming).

Any suggestions? I didnt want to go super cheap, or super expensive as they're not big buffs, but hoping at this price range one of these speakers would seem like a decent gift in bumping up their sound? They have a 65" samsung tv bought 3-4 years ago if that makes a difference?

Ratings for both are "ok" but sitll average, circa 7.x out of 10 on most places. They're also complaining about no wifi and other non-bluetooth connectivity, and no dolby atmos, but frankly they'd watch youtube, netflix and whatever overseas flix they can download, so I don't think they'd be making full use of blue ray or other 'high calibre' media anyhow?

Any advice? Store guy has the Q60R and has mentioned it's the first harman kadon one they brought out after purchasing, so wondering if the quality is worth the extra (At $799, unless it goes cheaper on sale usually?)

Comments

  • RTings rates the T650 as slightly better than the Q60T (note the T, not R).

    • yeap, that's what I don't get, the Q60R was definitely what was in store i thought. i'll double check tomorrow at lunch, but if so i presume the T is the latest model? in which case im unlikely to not get the $799 Q60R for any cheaper (jb hi fi guy checked) so i'm wondering if the T650 is better bang for buck at $399 ($200 off). It's listing on samsung says you can add the extra back speakers, but it's listed as "3.1 channels", whereas the Q60R is 5.1 channels - hence I thought only the Q60R you could add the back speakers? I'm not too flash in speakers lingo so maybe i've been confused?

      • You can add wireless rear speakers to both models.

If you want a 5.1 set, get the Q60.
If you don't, get the T650.

        • What's the difference between Q60 with a 5.1 setup vs the T650 which also allows a wireless setup? Sorry am just abit confused. I thought adding the rear speakers both become 5.1 setups?

How about the price difference - $399 (T650) vs $799 for just the Q60R at this point in time?

    • The older version outperforms the new one

And I wouldn't pay more than $525 as that is the recent sales price

  • I have the T650, it’s my first sound bar. I have it in the garage with my new TV. I’m happy with it. I went with it over the cheaper Samsung for the extra channel which is a seperate middle speaker for vocals. I find the subwoofer a little lacking but I’m used to a proper multi thousand dollar 5.1 surround system.
You can buy the two rear channel speakers separately.
