AV Receiver Recommendations $1500~

Would love to get a couple of recommendations for a new AV Receiver.

The last AV Receiver I purchased was my venerable Onkyo TX-SR606 back in 2008. Its still going, the front screen doesn't work anymore and for some reason when you press the Setup button it just flashes the TV screen and goes back to what you were doing. Needless to say, its time for an upgrade.

With an amp from 2008, I have it paired with a 5.1 set of Jamo S606's with the SUB300. An absolute favourite of the era. Honestly I'm not a massive audiophile and these still work really well, so I see no need to upgrade them.

I have a budget of $1500~, I'm sure I could squeeze a little extra if need be. But would like to stick in the budget.

Plugged into it will be a Nvidia Shield TV Pro. I'm not really a console gamer, if I want to play on the couch I find Gamestream with the Geforce video card pretty great. That said, I may consider a PS5 in the future but its unlikely. Reading around I can see that the new consoles are causing all sorts of compatibility issues from a futureproofing perspective with the current crop of AV Receivers.

My wife would also like to plug her Record Player in, its a Project Debut Carbon. I assume that might mean we need something that can take the Ground Wire too (phono??).

Outside of those two devices nothing else would be plugged in beyond the TV – being a Sony 55" Sony X8500H which will ideally be upgraded to an OLED of decent value at 65" in the medium term future (4K essential).

The speaker locations in the room aren't perfect but the old Onkyo had a little microphone setup (Audyssey) that helped a lot. So that feature would be desired too.

Outside of the above, we mostly watch movies and Netflix.

I don't have any brand loyalty and I'm open to ordering online (probably not from overseas though). It appears that JB doesn't stock a lot these days (weird, they used to have an entire wall of receivers).

So far the Yamaha RX-V6A comes up a lot.

So hopefully that about covers it.

STR-DN1080 is known as the commonly known go-to flagship, worth looking into as can be had much cheaper nowadays.

Marantz or Yamaha for that price.

most receivers come with mm ( moving magnet ) support. You will need a phono pre if your TT uses Mcnaught cartridge.

Using ps5 with receivers is going to introduce a delay. I would avoid this.
Also I would recommend a hi fi store where you can demo the receivers before you buy them.
    Where are you located?

    • I'm in Hobart.

So we don't have a lot of choice. There is a store called Quantum which has a good range and good service but they don't really have many competitors so they tend to gouge.

  • If you are planning on adding a next gen console or PC to your setup, just plug them straight into the TV and let ARC/eARC take the audio back to receiver. It will be pain/issue free and you don't have to pay extra for an HDMI 2.1 receiver.

I also think that budget might be excessive, there should be decent enough offerings under 1k if you're happy with HDMI 2.0

  • I myself was quite pleased with my previous purchase of a pioneer vsx933 and the andrew jones speaker packs and atmos addons once it was configured. I bought it because it was half the price of the yamaha one at the time while previously the yamaha was said to have better surround upmixing and be more surroundy and the yamaha was famously marketed for BURSON AUDIO OP AMPs. But well im poor so i got the pioneer speakers i wanted and planned to get as they were quite good for price. and i then found the pioneer in a half price sale or whatever online while the yamaha was full price everywhere.

The pioneer had the same AKM4450 or whatever it was DAC as many other devices on the market and the onkyo offerings and others from previous year or two while the yamaha similar but obviously burson which is better. But well using my TV from my PC then TV alternate HDMI port EARC to the receiver gets the audio working but then it sounds dullar and flatter less punchy and kicky and crisp loses some volume. Its like one was normalised and the other not. But for some reason my receiver had issues updating firmware i fiddled for ages not sure if it updated or i did a clear and reset. had to use USB and eventually plugged ethernet direct instead of wifi? well my receiver with HDMI 2.1 cables i bought 2 different brands it starts signal cut in and out flickering for sound sorta stuttery off and on like light switch rave party on and off rapid like a slow strobe light. Anyway to fix it i have to disable HDCP for the PC output from my GPU via HDMI.. i dont get it..

i got burson audio in my headphone amp chip and it sounds great and i had a older model AVR which had burson op amps so i definitely want it again it turns out TEXAS INSTRUMENTS bought out burson and own them and the latest yamaha has a TI BB PCM chip in there. so uhh i read the watts RMS output on the yamaha is listed as lower than the andrew jones speaker pack and pioneer amps by a little. So i was concerned i'd maybe need to spend fortunes on aventage range.. but the RXv6a seems to do all i need and it says online that its high slew rate means its actually possibly way more powerful effective output than whats on paper. and i doubt the aventage sounds like 4 times better than the v6a but it does cost 4 times more. I mainly want for full HDMI 2.1 tho my GPU isnt exactly HDMI 2.1 yet i plan to worry about that in a year or two when prices are more realistic or second hand. but yeah sometimes the HDMI cables will die and stop working when using the receiver altogether sorta or kinda feel like a rub your shoes on carpet and static shock your finger tips to touch the cable? seems to buzz with energy so imma try watch pricing for a month or two and hope to replace my current works but not sure if its actually working model of pioneer that sounded rather fantastic but sucked at upmixing audio to surround sound each profile mode sounded lacking in either treble or bass or some EQ band and less life like. When you set the receiver to all mono or basic stereo and it sounds best and better by a mile i think it means the upmixing in its garbage and it fails to process the sound signal cleanly almost noisily hissy from stereo to 5.1 upmix on dolby digital if listen to rear speakers unless preupmix in software first then its still kinda shitty unless set to mono or extra stereo so i will definitely say its a great sounding AVR from pioneer for certain bluray discs or something atmos multitrack but for other things its hit and miss..

The problem is with a AVR even with HDMI 2.1 im not sure if freesync can function with a AVR in between.. i know VRR is freesync and its part of HDMI 2.1 standards.. but it was absent from all receivers i'd seen and tested till now possibly because the HDMI signal is encrypted they must receive it and decrypt it first to process the audio then be the new output device which isnt freesync.. but then how does the VRR supposedly work? freesync and VRR simply lower latency ultimately and make everything buttery smooth. You can see a HTC vive or LG v50 with built in native freesync in the display panel to experience better freesync maybe? its a bit like film editing frame smoothing motion compensation smoothing in post processing. plus i'd wanna try and take my old one to a vinnies or whatever.. not sure if i can get any cash for it.. im unemployed so just got it on my "to do list of upgrades."

question is which retailer to buy the yamaha from for best price and which is likely to be best official reseller.. like amazon? or kogan? or was it selby accoustics but thats like more expensive? maybe from ebay in a ebay sale should be same thing and same model right? trade war u cant be sure what you get when u buy stuff or what price you get it for, if the price is real.. JBhifi charge fortunes 10x more for bronze age technology while cheapest of chinese tech thats only a century old production techniques costs like $10 vs $300 for bronze age caveman garbage the cheap chinese shit sounds worlds better just from the metal smelting and forging techniques used and purity levels.. even if chinese people use alloys they can use silver and gold in their stuff and u can buy like meters of jewellers wire for what JB hifi wants for a USB cable thats decades old obsolete standard and speed we are on USB 4 at the moment they want like 20bucks for a 15-50mbit USB 2 cable or micro USB and $50 for a USB 3 cable decades old.. when theres 40GB USB 4 devices for sale for more than half a year now and USB cables are like $5 or 10bucks elsewhere for thunderbolt or whatever.

Also lately im a fan of hatsune miku music (she's a crowd sourced open licence performer that sings in any and all languages with track creators from around the world originally created with yamaha synth keyboard voice tech from the 60's the same one the KITT car from knight rider which caused criminals to kill for the tech to disguise their voice for use in phone based crimes that was eventually sealed away and the super better scifi like deepfake almost voice tech from the yamaha company was not up for sale but people asked to buy it for decades and like 60 years later offered a few bucks like 300 or 50bucks or something and they gave them the 60's keyboard voice synth miku which was licenced to crypton media and made into vocaloid idols now called piapro, with huge list of guiness world records for concert attendance and cost like $15USD per concert ticket which the ticket to get in was to buy a glow stick which caused people to attack people when they found out there was some of best concerts on earth for dirt cheap and u could buy life time passes for peanuts so they had to darken crowd and make hard to see their faces on the DVDs at concerts as jealous 60's garage bands of alcoholic druggos wanna parade their rotten old corpses on stage still for hundreds of dollars per hour. i like the 2012 moon alternate angle song on youtube and a heap of others like teo, hated by life itself, hibana and so on. Part of her licencing was maybe to display yamaha logo someplace im not certain of the terms and conditional requirements to use her for profit but concert prices were capped i believe? anyway since yamaha was at the peak of audio tech in like the 80's but had often been overlooked as some of its devices were either too entry level or too expensive i'd not tested them much myself but i believe a lot of famous 80's karaoke reverb and synth keyboard is the famous yamaha sound people crave so im keen to try one from a nerd fan point of view like how sony made SACD/walkman/DXD+DSDminidisc/CD and stuff invented blurays and other milestones in tech i felt sony AVR's were a bit underwhelming but had not tried their most expensive models as most sony tech is often sorta prototype like look at this thing we made its great but costs a heap and we only built a few of them nobody knows they exist,)

*** crazy paranoid ranting thats not really relevant but maybe educational *** is it hacker idiots trying to sabotage my AV receiver or because they want my super awesome AMD GPU 5700xt and CPU (AMD is like 50 years ahead of intel and nvidia in technology but the software people running is 1950's COBOL stuff commonly called C++ after it got a feature or 2 added by the 70's your charges on 30 watts for an hour phone shouldnt game same 1080p or 4k and 8kvideo and VR on your qualcomm snapdragon samsung and LG and xiaomi's and stuff with the AMD ADRENO GPU <same radeon scaled down low power imageon engine because decades old infinity fabric scales infinitely>) should not be running genshin impact the same 60fps as your 200watts per second CPU and 200watts per second GPU and its expensive overclocking samsung Bdie full power gaming RAM and HBM5 or GDDR6x and NVME drives your phone is a cheap microwave/hifi/mp3player/rice cooker and media player/TV/Camera/digital watch/calculator RISC chip its not really a real computer but the 50's C++ code and software is made to run on all cheap calculator fake computers budget low power low cost so its industry standard to use C++ so it can run on your microwave. but want my 50 years better than intel and nvidia because they got like 11th gen banners on their roughly 20 year old intel CPUs to run their shitty crypto video game for them because their choice of hardware is atari ST2000 based tech or 50s stock exchange IBM calculators with TV output.

anyway people probably try to crypto mine on my PC because they dont know it cant ever be used for real money and is the worst video game ever made because it can be duplicated or the HDD opened and scanned sector by sector or break the encryption with quantum super computers instantaneously so it will never be legal tender currency backed by any government or major financial institution that knows what currency is and looks like. just because its not all tied to gold now because we use gold audio jacks and gold mainboard circuits and gold jewellery rather than leave it sitting in banks as collateral or carry around wagonloads of gold coins to pay for stuff.. So instead we have a treasury based on economy businesses value and people and resources like fuels/sugars/food sugar is both fuel and food and water and stones/minerals things the country has . Money is a promisary note like oh you want to sell me a mountain of gold worth of product everyweek but even though i've banks all over the country it takes time to gather that much and load it into a truck for you every day of the week so i will give you a paper coupon thats a promissary note that im good for this much money, my word is good as gold its all in the vaults across the land. But when douches loan more money than exists at the bank or they give people with no job or no hope of repaying anything a bigger loan we get inflation, like oh you wanna buy a 5 million dollar house and pay it off within 10 years but you only earn 15,000usd per year as a couple annually sure we can loan you 7million but if you fail to pay it back fully in 5 years we gonna triple it in interest those guys are retards. but yeah thats how money works its oil or coal or whatever behind it still but crypto has no government and no oil or food or country to give it value its fortnite vbucks without any chugjug. so yeah USA people live above their means and all of them in debt coz work many jobs still poor so they buy it on credit then bankrupt or try to run away? but like overdrawing is a common government tactic its maybe why USA is in debt they say our country earns 20 profit per year but we need a bout 30 in purchases, lets buy 10 from 3 different places and have it paid back over 5 years, but the 3 places talk to each other and go wtf he owes you 10 but that guy owes me 10 too shit 3x 10s owed but he only has 20 in his pocket lets all force him to pay up right away we have to get our money NOW! so yeah people who dont know what money is or how it works are stupid enough to mistake crypto for money.. it isnt unless a government backs it up.. but large geographical nations like australia can still be an 1800's technological backwater mud hole and not know what a robot looks like but still have a dollar strength comparable to that of the USA.. which makes australians proud like "our country must be as good as other countries since our dollar pretends to compare to theirs"..but yeah basically you can crypto mine way faster on AMD than intel/nvidia so people maybe put viruses on the internet hunt for superior devices is my speculation or just plain jelly. *** </End rant>
