Tradie Signs on Customer Jobs

Does anybody know why some people agree to having signs advertising the business of tradies who did work on their house?

I especially see it with new fence and gate installs, also roof repairs.

Personally I’d see it as an eyesore but maybe that’s just me 😇

  • Also interested, can't understand why you would.

I'd assume they receive a significant discount.

Yep, was offered a discount on my solar system if I put up a sign on the front of the house for a period of time (12 months from memory?). I laughed at their offer and countered with my own offer that was far more realistic. They laughed and I paid full price for the system. They stuck their stickers to everything, so I tore them all off, put them in a parcel with a brick and sent them back, receiver pays. Never heard from them again.

For what it is worth, their offer was $120 discount on my system. My counter was $1,200. The sign was about A3~ish sized.

How do you send a parcel without paying and make the receiver for it?

You can send a parcel COD and say that the costs to be collected are for the postage costs only. The sender does not have to pay for it if they are not expecting it, but most of the times, they will. They are not allowed to open it until after they pay for it, so they won’t know what it is until they pay for it.

I do the something similar with junk mail. I wait until I have enough, and then I find that particular company’s “replies paid” return address and start sending their junk mail back.

Might I suggest a 'No junk mail' sticker?

          • @djkelly69: You may. I already have one, and 60% of the time, it works every time…

It stops the postman from dropping junk mail. It doesn’t completely stop the walkers from doing the same….

  • I think people are just too shy to say no.

    Agree with OP.

Reminds me of cars I see driving around advertising:

    • dealerships: dealership number plate surrounds (extra points if the dealership is actually printed on the numberplate itself, in NSW) - triple points when it's dealership surrounds AND dealer-branded plates.
    • government schemes: fuel consumption label still on windscreen .
    • manufacturers: 5/7 year warranty stickers still plastered on rear window(s).
    • businesses - stickers for tyre/mechanics/dealers/tinters/car washes/etc unless friends/family own the business perhaps.

Some people are obviously indifferent and simply don't see these things as cheap and tacky.

Last car I went to purchase had one of those dealer branded plates, I made them remove it and replace it with non-dealer plates. If you’re not paying me to advertise, take your shit off my vehicle. Plastic surrounds I usually break off and hand back to the sales guy or service manager. (I always stipulate in the sales contract “no commercial advertising to be placed on vehicle”)

Dealer stickers on cars at service time piss me off. Unless they are giving me a large discount to advertise, I’ll say “and no stickers, thanks”. If it’s on there when I go to pick up, it gets torn off and stuck to the service counter. “Sorry, you guys accidentally left this on my car…”

    No it’s often a scam.
Elderly person gets huge quote to get roof resprayed
Fence replaced, house cladded, etc etc.
This is a fishing exercise, he/she agrees to quote and scammer gets massive profit.

Or never accepts quote and scammer calls a few weeks later and says “your such a nice person I’m feeling generous this month I’ll just take 70% off the quote and take it out of this months advertising budget.
On the condition you put up sign for 6 months.”

  • Sometimes it is for convience for deliveries. Our builder had one and he said it was helpful for all the various sub contractors and deliveries to find the right place.

    Didn't bother us.

To be honest one missing delivery or trade who "lost their way" impacts me as much as the builder

  • The guy who did the concrete on my driveway put the sign up without asking. He did a good job so I left it there for a few weeks.

I like to tear off the Nike and adidas logos off my shirts.
The cotton quality of the shirts is awesome but im not into advertising for them.
Rather have a tear in my brand new shirt!
And after a while i almost forget that it was sewn in a sweatshop.
