I went from a Garmin Vivoactive 3 which I loved, to a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE because I thought having some more smartphone-like features would be cool, but boy was I wrong. Syncing health data and workouts/runs back to Garmin/Strava was a nightmare. Battery anxiety was also too high. I had to charge it every night, sometimes twice a day if I used both GPS and LTE…

In steps the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro. BEST DECISION I EVER MADE. First of all, which I think is the best feature of Garmin watches compared to Apple/Samsungs, my watch battery lasts 13 days. 13!! Health and fitness tracking is out of this world. It has Garmin pay and I can get my phone notifications which is all a watch really needs to do. I can quick reply if I want (but rarely do) I just get out my phone to deal with it properly.

My wife and I picked up his and hers Fenix 6 Pros for $550 each. Just wait for a deal or grab one off Gumtree. I would even pay much more in hindsight.

    Good luck.

    • Thank you mate

    • Thank you mate

    • Just curious how did you get it for $550? Also what do you think of the 6 compared to the 6X? Cheers

      • Got lucky with "new in box" on Gumtree. 6X is too big for my wrist. I tried them all on in store. 6 was the perfect size.

        • Awesome, thanks for the info! Btw, what size is your wrist? JB does not let you try them now due to Covid. Lots of hype for the upcoming JB sale for the 6X Sapphire. Cheers

          • @JaeTee: approximately 17cm in circumference.

            • @nextdoormaths: Awesome, thanks for the information. My wrist is the same size and was curious how the 6X would sit but was suspecting it would be too big but lots of people with small wrist still seem to say they can pull off the 6X, just don't know how functional it will be for working out.

@JaeTee: The 6 is more than fine if you have a similar size wrist. The 6X might look huge. All depends on what look you are going for :)

  • I don't know much about the Samsung, but I have a Fenix 6Pro which I am very happy with. The Fenix series are amazing fitness tracker watches. They are not really smart watches.

The Samsung Galaxy 3 looks from a 5 minute read of the website to be a smart watch with a good set of fitness tracking features.

So the choice looks like it comes down to - do you want a dedicated and powerful fitness tracker with a long battery life that is built like a tank? Or do you want the smart watch features with some fitness tracking thrown in, which will require charging much more often?

  • They're the same product for completely different markets. It's like would you prefer to buy a car that is the VW Golf R, or would you prefer to buy the VW Amarok V6.

    The Garmin Fenix / Amarok:
…this is a product that does, and isn't focussed on user experience and style as much.

    The Galaxy Watch / Golf:
…this is a more mainstream product, it is less focused on specific features, and moreso on style and user experience.

    Conclusion:
If you are an athlete, as in someone who spends at least two days in a week doing fitness, get the Garmin. However, based on the pizza deals here on OzBargain and our increasing obesity rates, most people won't take advantage of those features and they will be better served with the Samsung.

    My take?
Women have a lot of fashion items. Men only have a watch. I would recommend most men get the Galaxy Watch3, buy a couple different straps (eg Leather, Rubber, Metal, Milanese, Perlon, Nato, Nasa, etc) to interchange these daily, and change the watch-face daily, that way it sort of feels like having a watch collection. Examples: Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster, Breitling Navitimer, Bell&Ross 03, Casio G-Shock etc etc.
