Seeking Advice on RAV4 2014 Tyres

Hi all,

I'm looking to change my car tyres and I'm not sure which one should I get and where is the best deal around Melbourne area.
I know I can go to Costco, but has anyone had any experience with Costco Tyre Centre? is their price competitive with the rest in Melbourne area?

Should I get those all weather tyres or specific tyre? The car mainly use for daily drives and road trip.

Any brand recommendation (or specific model)?

I'm not sure how much my budget is yet, but OzBargainers always have to find the best deal that give the best value too hahaha
Because I don't know the general prices for tyres, as this is my first time changing 4 of them.

Thank you in advance :)

Edit: Thank you to those who has given me the advice, I went with Michelin Primacy SUV. Will definitely update again once I have done 5000km or 10,000km

You'll need to take a look at your current tyres so you know what sizes you need

    https://www.autocraze.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Unde…

I've gotten mine from tyroola, but mine's were Michelin PS4/Bridgestone RE003 which might not be suitable/practical for a Rav4 (i.e.. those are more for… speedier cars).

I'd recommend Michelins in general too

    • I think my tyre's size is this : 225/65R17 102H

Does the brand of the tyres have an impact on cabin noise level as well?

there's no universal saying that Brand A will always make quieter tyres than Brand B.

each brand has their own model/class of tyres that focuses on different aspects, e.g. Michelin has Pilot Sports for speed/performance/grip and i think Primacy?or something is more for cruiser/longevity/comfort

(also side note, some cars may have a bad noise reduction in the cabin itself, so some tyres yes they reduce noise, some - because of how the cabin is sound-proofed - makes very little difference is noise reduction)

if you're happy with the same ones just get the same ones because you already know how much noise and how long it lasted.

or go to a shop bridgestone / bobjane / jax, tell them what car you got and the tyre size you mentioned above and see if they have any suggestions. get a second or third opinion.

maybe whirlpool toyota thread might help

        • That's true, I read somewhere in the forum too about that.
It all depends on the car itself, I know that RAV4 is quite noisy in the cabin unless you spend $$ for sound proofing.

I have never changed the tyre before actually, I assumed this is the original tyre, as I bought this car 2nd hand 4 years ago.
I think it is time to change, as I check the thread it was quite worn out.

Yea I might check BobJane, since its near to me as well as Costco tyre.

          Thank you :D

Look at the size on the tyre.
Get on Google and search for buy tyres followed by the size.
Prices can vary greatly so effort in searching will mean a saving for you.
I find Tyreright to be generally the best vale.
Brands?… Michelin #1, Bridgestone or Kumho.

    • Yeap will be looking out for those, I have done some research as well prior to posting it here, just wanted to see where people usually go.
So that I know their service and after service is good in comparison to other shops. Thank you :)

You will struggle to find a better value option than these Japanese made Toyo Proxes CF2 - I just got a couple from Tyroola when they had their click frenzy specials. Don't worry about 106 vs 102 (that means it's a better quality tyre with a more solidly made sidewall)
    https://www.tempetyres.com.au/tyreproducts?toyo-2256517-106v…
Great all-around touring tyre and relatively quiet as well. I think the reason there are some bargains around is that the stock is a little old. Mine were made in the 45th week of 2019 so 1-year-old approx. That's fine considering tyres have a shelf life of about 6 years before they start to turn into rubbish even if there's thread left (that's what made me replace 2 tyres - shop who fitted them said are you sure you want to replace these?? But they were 6 years old and terrible in the rain despite being very good tyres when new).

These Dunlops would be better if you don't mind a little more noise and take the Rav4 on dirt roads occasionally. It might also last a little longer than the Toyos but I don't think they're as good as an overall product (dry and wet handling and braking etc) … https://www.tempetyres.com.au/tyreproducts?dunlop-2256517-10…

Try to get a similar sort of price if the above link is too far away.

edit: if money is not tight I'd go a Michelin as well as my number 1 choice

$25 or so difference X4 is just $100 more than the Toyos and the tyres should last you a fair few years depending on how many km you do…

      Thank you for the input.

Yea, Most of the time I will be driving in the city area, and inner suburbs.
It looks like Tempetyres is based in Sydney. I might look for something local here in Melbourne so that if there anything I can go back to them and fix it.
Yea I'm trying to reduce the noise in the cabin as my RAV4 do not have soundproofed around the body.

After researching here and there, it seems like the Michelin would be a good choice. I know I should avoid those cheap unknown brands, safety first.
Since Michelin is a well-known brand I would say, and I might be driving more often if my work location changes in the near future (which I can forsee it happening soon).

  • Michelin primacy are quiet tyres. If noise is important, that's what I'd get.

    • Do you have it fitted in your car currently?

      Thank you

      • No. But it is well documented.

And I ended up getting the Michelin Primacy SUV

          • @froddoog: Initial impressions?

@John Kimble: Great! far better than my old tyres haha
Better handling for sure. I will do update once I have done some driving this weekend as I will be going for a road trip with the family.
