Hi All.

Could you please let me (know if) rumpus and sunroom require any council approval?

    Check with your council

  • I’ll let you RUMPUS

  • Yes

  • What about a "rumpus" and "sunroom" with built in wardrobes?

Most likely yes. Don't believe what the agent says, and make enquiries with the relevant council.

  • I put an enclosed awning on the back a few years ago. Guess some may call it a sunroom or something else. Required the works, plans, DA, storm water attachment, inspections etc.

    • I got to know from the agent that RUMPUS and SUNROOM build 20 years ago. do I still need to concerns about this?

If you're talking about potentially non-approved extensions to a property you are considering buying, you need to deal all appropriate due diligence via your solicitor.

It doesn't matter if they're called RUMPUS and SUNROOM (or anything else), it's either a compliant/approved construction or it's not.

While it might be unlikely, worst case is you have a council demand to dismantle, etc. and then you've just lost a whole heap of $$$$.

Yes, because if for whatever reason council find out, they'll make you tear it down….

Never ever believe anything an agent tells you, fact check yourself with local council.

        • Unlikely they would make you tear it down. More likely they would ask for a retrospective DA to make it official. There will be some costs tfor this and a possibility of minor modifications.

Very rarely does a council force a demolition unless the construction is outrageous and the owner unwilling to negotiate.

The new build in the last street I lived in was 1 metre forward of the building line and nothing was done. This is why so many developers ask for forgiveness rather than approval.

  • Not if you build it on wheels & can tow it away.

  • Not if it has bean bags..

  • What are you doing? Adding a room?

Where I live (City of Sydney heritage area) anything that is on the outside of the building needs approval, anything on the inside is fair game.

In other areas there are "exempt development" items like awnings and small sheds.

Your best action is to ask your council

    • I am planning to buy a property which has RUMPUS and SUNROOM. not sure it was as per the plan or not. or does have any approval from the council.

Ask the council… That's part of the role of the service centre.

        Do they look tacked on?

        • No, they don't look tacked on.

          • @shafaet: Hi brad1-8tsi,
yes, it tacked on. please ignore my earlier response.
and this is a solid brick construction similar to the original house. even the roof height looks like the same for the RUMPUS.
wondering why the owner would spend that much money without comply with everything?
