eBay Purchase of 100ml Hair Oils Contained 80ml to 90ml

I bought a couple of different oils to put on my hair from an eBay seller. The 100ml amount specified varied from 90ml to 80ml in reality.

I am really unsurprised by this, but somehow they have barely any negative feedback from thousands of feedback.

There is no way this is an accident, all of them were at least 10% less, and one was exactly 20% less.

Of course I can simply demand a partial refund and eBay will force them to, but they will just keep doing this, knowing that few people will weigh and check.

This pissed me off a lot, because the seller knows full well what they are doing.

Edit:
Now from the replies I have weighed it in a measuring cup instead and it is the correct weight, except minus the packaging. So It is slightly below 100ml, but only by the weight of the plastic pouch. It is about 5% but I guess thats acceptable margin of error.

    Your eBay feedback?

    • I havent left any feedback yet

Did it measure out to 100ml in a measuring cylinder or something similar? How did you measure the contents?

      Weight apparently?

knowing that few people will weigh and check.

Apparently 1ml of vegetable oil is 0.947 grams.

I weighed it on scales with the container zeroed and also weighed the original packaging to be sure. And I calibrated the scales beforehand

1ml does not always equal 1g, unless it's water or has SG like water.

I weighed it in ml though, also all the items had differing, and below 100ml weight, when if they were correct, they would all weigh about the same

@FireSword: You can’t weigh millilitres. A millilitre is a measure of volume, not weight. If the oils have the same density as water (they don’t), or if you knew the density of the oils (you don’t), then you could convert volume to weight (you can’t).

Maybe there isn’t a lot of negative feedback because most buyers know this.

            • @GrueHunter: I dont have a way to accurately weigh it then, but I bought 2 of each type, and those have different weights as well. So really I cant tell.

@FireSword: If only there was an accurate, scientific way to measure liquids other than weighing them…🤔

          • @FireSword: How did you find the SG of oil? Did you input the sg into the- I assume scientific- scale? How does the scale know you're measuring oil and not water?

            • @Ughhh: No I didnt, so I guess I cant figure it out, but all of them have different weights, even ones that are the same type.

              • +1

@FireSword: I think the correct way to measure would be to mark how full they are with a fine point pen when you get them. Then empty them and wash away any leftover residue making sure it's dry, then weigh them, then fill to the line you marked using water, then weigh again, should be 100g heavier.

        • So if it weighs the same in ml and g, does that mean it is like water?

          • @FireSword: It just means that 1ml of water weighs 1g. Other liquids do not conform to this rule. The reason oil floats on top of water is because it is lighter than water.

            • @Boioioioi: Yeah I was very confused that oil weighs less than water. And it actually does. If you just showed me a vial of oil and a vial of water, I would think the oil is a lot denser, but even though it is more viscous, somehow its lighter and less dense.

  • Are they home made or sealed manufactured bottles?

    • Its in these pouches which a lot of ebay sellers use to save money and so they can post them in a letter, but this seller has 6000 feedback in the last 2 years, so a really big seller.

Guys, I bought 100ml of Mercury, but they sent 1.3kgs. Should I tell them they sent too much? ;)

  • Buy some more and syringe it. Take a photo and complain if not accurate.

    • Its okay, I weighed it in a measuring cup and its only less than 100ml by the weight of the packaging.

I'm sorry but this makes absolutely no sense.

I weighed it in a measuring cup and its only less than 100ml by the weight of the packaging

You can not weigh to measure volume (ml) unless you know the Specific Gravity of each of the oils.

To check the volume, all you needed to do was to go to your local supermarket and purchase a cheap measuring small measuring container showing ml, or go to your local pharmacy and buy a cheap medicine measuring vessel.

This website may help you understand the difference between volume and mass(weight).

        • Yes, so basically what I said but replace weight with volume. I will look at the link you gave.

          • @FireSword:

Its okay, I weighed it in a measuring cup and its only less than 100ml by the volume of the packaging.

            This? 🤔

  • Hair Oils

Some hair elixir? more potent than truffle oil?

  • Somebody failed chemistry at school. Can't believe people actually use a scale to measure volume. That only works with water. Is basic chemistry not taught in Australian schools?

    • Its a common mistake…. no need to be harsh on OP. At least he/she was understanding and learnt from the incident ^__^
