I still am yet to try it, but I’ve always enjoyed watching the few videos I’ve seen with trollers catching people in traps

Was that recently? Game was in beta and went public release in the last year or so - which meant price pumped.
Cheapest its been this year according to OzB was $28~

At the risk of sounding elitist, old rust (old engine) was way better then the steaming pile of crap it is today. Pretty sure I only paid $15 about 5 years ago, not sure how $38 is a deal
This game is super fun and addictive 10/10 would not recommend though, as it's way too time consuming haha!
I found it pretty much impossible to play while being employed because every night after work all of your base would be destroyed and gear stolen by people who can spend 16hrs a day on it.
Yeah you really need to play with others that have the time to be on randomly and do all the time consuming stuff haha. Build up enough of a base to have defenses etc… I stopped playing years ago simply because to be able to play it you need to be able to put a fair bit of time in it (and you can spend hours just looking for scrap). Having said that you can jump in and play for fun and build a bunch of small bases and run around.
This has been as low as A$8.82 so I'm not sure why 5x the price is a deal
