  i bought a bunch of those ice packs 4 years ago. they work pretty good but have this weird, slimy layer on on top for a while which you'll need to rinse off regularly. i doubt it's harmful to your food, but does leave residue in your esky or cooler bag which you'll need to clean out regularly. and if you want them to last longer, don't expand them to max capacity. the outer plastic layer can tear and soon you'll get blobs of gel oozing out everywhere.
