For those who only buy "free range" eggs - FYI, I have worked in the poultry industry and seen it all. As stated previously in another deal, chickens have herd mentality and like to keep cool and dry. Therefore during most days, they would rather be in their air conditioned cages/coops than outside in the hot sun, rain or freezing winter.

All these companies sell out if there's money to be made. Look at the RSPCA they put their name on chicken products that are not free range.
good price obviously. But I've owned chickens and while they are of course a herd animal, they also seem to enjoy roaming and moving around. Mine would travel around the yeard in a V formation looking for worms and what have you. To say that they are herd animals and therefore love cages seems fallacious. For the cool and dry component a simple shaded area and clean water would suffice. I will continue to purchase free range eggs and other food where possible, and I encourage others to do the same, thereby reducing the price and eventually forcing cage farms and high density processes to be ended. And I say this as a recreational hunter; I'll shoot a deer no issue, but at least I know it had a good life.
Have you visited a "free range" farm? The water, shade and feed are all in the coops. Nothing is outside, just open area to comply with the "free range" regulation.
I haven't, so I may be ill informed. However to say that all free range egg farms follow the same design is disingenuous, and to say that chickens don't want to go outside equally so.
I'm not a PETA person or anything along those lines, I've just owned animals in lower quantities for eggs and eventual slaughter. But I always looked after them and sorted them out myself at the end. They all had distinct personalities, especially pigs. Hard to eat pork now lol, but it's tasty.
This is based from my own observations and conversations i've had with my ex-colleagues.
Rearing your own animals for food vs mass production is completely different. With Australia having one of the highest minimum wages in the world - if all farm businesses were to adopt that level of ethical compliance, all meat products would start costing as much as kobe beef.

"most days", not 24/7. And a chicken in a battery cage is very different to having the freedom to wonder back into the barn/shed IF one decides it's too cold or wet outside. Caged eggs wouldn't be a bargain even if they were free.
Free the chickens .
Bottom line is most consumers like the price point and check out minimum standard for free range there is not much difference .
Too many people in many field need to think a little .
