GoodLife Gyms - $10 a Month to Suspend Membership

Hey!

I wonder if this is common across gyms, though I recently I broke my wrist and wanted to suspend my account.

The website states you can suspended for 2 weeks at a time, a maximum of 4 weeks per year. The lady charged me $10 a month to suspend my account, even though I've been a member for 10 + years.

What's funny is that my Derrimuts membership cost me under $300 for 12 months but GoodLife want to charge me $120 per year to have a suspended account.

What's funnier, is that you can join the gym right now with no joining fee and the exact same weekly fee I pay.
Just cancel your membership and re-sign up?

I just find this so ridiculous, and tomorrow I will be ringing up to cancel my membership and I will resign up in a month's time.

It just seems to me that companies forget about their loyal customers, in order just to get new customers. :/

Yes. I think this is common in every case where you are given the terms and conditions before signing up, and then agree to them.

Why not just go and do stuff for the rest of your uninjured body?

    • I really wanted my body to focus the healing on my wrist, so I mainly wanted to suspend it for 6 weeks.

I have multiple gym memberships though, so I was just going to use another gym membership until I'm back to 100%.

Just find it super frustrating that I'm charged $10 a month!

  • You'll probably find they require a months notice to cancel your membership.

    • 10 days I believe.

  • you can do a long-term suspension. 9 months for a once-off fee of $20.

    • They never mentioned anything like this to me.

      • did you explain to them why you are suspending?

the $20 fee is usually for pregnancy and sports injury.

        • Yeah, but i'll ring again and try.

GoodLife have always been shit for customer service and loyal members - I now go to "Derrimut" like most others in the area but before that i was @ good life (Originally Fenix Water Gardens) 4 four years and can without a doubt say they are a terribly run gym - they try to charge a premium but have an average set up. When i was with them they weren't 24hours and used to close on Public holidays at 12pm and 8pm on Fridays which was shambles - so at least they realise they needed to be 24/7 - Do they still not allow you to use other gyms in the franchisees without pay a ridiculous amount on top of your membership?

I know Derrimut isn't run a whole lot better but they charge appropriately and you can use any location. Overall Derrimut also has more equipment and a better vibe - there gym shop is competitively priced for sups - there are way to many heroes that think they are Arnold but other then that it is the best value gym in the area - possibly in all Victoria.

If i was you i wouldnt resign up

    • Yeah, my local has equipment that dates 20 years. It's a joke! It's just that its 3 mins away, and Derrimuts is 12-15 minutes away.

  • a bit off topic but is 6 weeks enough for a broken wrist to heal?

    • +1

Depends on the break but text bookwise

3 weeks Bone - union ie too early to put weight - but might start gentle movements
6 week Bone - consolidation ie commence weight bearing as tolerated

12 weeks should be fully functioning

      • oh okay. thanks for clarifying - good to know. I have a ligament issue (obviously a different issue) which is taking 9 weeks excluding rehab.
I did think a broken bone is "easier" to fix but thought that breaking the wrist, given the structure, would also do some damage to ligaments etc

        • Correct bones heal well bcuz of the good blood supply ligaments are generally not as well supplied

      • 12 weeks, initial healing for cast to be removed is around 6 weeks.
I said 6 weeks to entirely give my body the rest, then I was going to head in to begin training lower body etc

        • If you waited 12 weeks to start physio ie 6 weeks after the cast came off ur wrist would be incredibility stiff…..

Rehab will probably take twice as long…. if not three times….

  • Goodlife are renowned for screwing people over so I went over my contract with a fine tooth comb before signing. (same as OP Im a 3 minute walk from them and my local is actually a really nice gym)
I have had both very good experience with them, and bad. Good experience when I was pregnant they let me suspend my membership for $20 one off as mentioned above which I thought was quite reasonable. You may need a Drs or physios cert although I dont think I had to prove I was pregnant! Bad experience they keep adding some random extra fees to my account for personal training stuff I didnt sign up to and didnt receive. So you have to check your bank carefully if you suspend!
