Pretty decent projector for the price, some people might prefer a brighter and quieter 720p projector for the same price but personally I am really happy with this one.

You do need to know that the projector fans are pretty loud, probably comparable to a desktop PC with fans on 100% (one that's not optimised to be quiet). It's not really an issue for me and you don't notice it when you're watching a movie unless there's a quiet scene. There can also be some blurring towards the edges due to not the best lens design, but it's really not noticeable in movies and quite minimal on mine. Finally the Keystone is a fake one and crappy. Don't use it unless you want the top and bottom of the projection to be blurry, so you'll have to physically move the projector to align things.

Cons:
- Loud
- Poor Keystone
- Slight blur towards edges
- Not 5000 ANSI lumens

Neutral:
- Speakers (Not bad, not good. Fantastic in a pinch, can get very loud)

Pros:
- LESS THAN $300
- Native 1080p
- HDMI CEC (Only power control tho)
- Draws ~150W (Probs an indicator of brightness)
- Honestly bright enough to use on an overcast day without pulling down the blind as long as it's projecting bright colours. Otherwise I hope you have good blinds, I know I don't.

Inb4 "You can get a 1080p tv with better colours and brightness for the same price".
Look, you're not getting this for the colours or the brightness or the contrast. You're getting this because it's a big ass screen for your elbudgeto theatre setup and boy is damn worth it if you go in knowing what it's flaws are.

+1 from me just for the write up

I wonder what the long-term quality is like on this? Kogan can be a bit hit and miss. Sometimes you can get a solid Kogan product and other times, you'll get a buggy/broken mess. A few months after a bit of use, I wonder how this holds up? I'm somewhat happy with my Kogan Android TV, but it is buggy and occasionally needs to be hard reset (by unplugging it). Their returns process would cost me more money than the TV is worth, so we grin and bear it considering it is only in the kids playroom.

    • I have had mine for 5 months, I got it on pre-sale and it has held up very well so far. The only time I had a problem was when I got the Chromecast with GTV and realised my pre-sale firmware didn't have HDMI CEC. I contacted Kogan and they gave me a delivery label to check it out as they were unable to provide the firmware update to me. They replaced the unit entirely and I got it back in about a week. There's not much to this projector to go buggy TBH, I basically exclusively use the HDMI input with either my laptop or now the Chromecast with GTV. Download Kodi and get real-debrid and you've got a great cheap movie/show setup on a budget. Disclaimer: Real-debrid is completely legit and legal, what you access with it is your choice and may not be ;)

I see this said often but I haven't had any issues with Kogan products. I've had TVs, smart kettle, dumb kettle, various other electronics and all of them have been trouble free.

I've only once had to return bed linen which shrunk to a stupid size after one wash and they were quick to return and refund.

Only miss for me, never buying anything from Kogan again - bar Kogan mobile.

Very well reviewed OP ..awsome work there..

    "loud" pass

    • +1

That's fair enough, certainly can be a deal breaking flaw for some people.

Thanks, might give this a try. We have a theatre room with a projector that the previous owners left with this house as it was an early 2000s model.

It has finally died and want something cheap for the half dozen times a year we want to watch a movie in that room.

    • +2

That's awesome! If you do get it I recommend turning down the sharpness to 20. Makes the colours and detail much nicer.

      • Thanks, ended up getting one. Watched a couple of reviews and aside from needing to be in a dark room (which the previous owners went to big lengths to make it so) and noise which I don't think it will be a problem due to the size of the room and will just be for movies I don't think I will have too many issues.

Only potential issue I think I have is having to move the installation location based on my current installation, current projector is about 6.5m from the screen so may need to tweak this a little based on the max throw distance listed.

They talk about native 1080p while not mentioning the size of the projector's DMD chip. How convincing…

    • Please correct me if I am wrong, but I am not sure that an LED projector has a DMD chip. I believe it is literally a 1080p LCD display through which an LED shines.

      • Yeah most likely is, like all these cheap Chinese projectors. I just had to take apart my 720p one to clean out the dust accumulated internally and it's pretty much that. For mine the screen size is at best 4-5" diagonally. But hey it does the job well enough for me, tempted to upgrade OP thanks for the write up.

Wish they have a xiaomi one for sale

  • I was looking at this similar model on Amazon last night which is $80 more. Does anyone have experience with it, or is able to provide some comparison to this Kogan one? (I know very little about projectors)

Typically I ignore Kogan stuff because it has always been bottom tier garbage (personal experience).

    • +4

I've thrown out garbage much better than many new Kogan products.

Cheap projectors are typically very hard to judge until you have it in your hand. Usually they don't have proper Keystone, will be blurry on the edges, won't be native 1080p but will make it seem like they are with their "supports 1080p" comment and they always overblow how bright they are. The only reliable brightness you can go off is if they state an "ANSI Lumens" value because that has a standard way of measuring it.

For the Kogan F800 Projector it's the same as the Elphass Q9 and the Alfawise Q9, and probably more. I'm not sure who knocked off who. I think once you start spending more than $300 on a not well reviewed or known territory projector you start moving into territory where you'd be better off buying a second hand one that is very well known and regarded for similar pricing.

It's really reviews and research when it comes down to it. I don't know heaps about projectors but I did so much research to get a native 1080p projector for a cheap price and when I bought this one on pre-sale I already knew what it's flaws were so I wasn't disappointed by them when I got it.

If you look on Reddit or even OzBargain there are more options for better projectors as you go up in price so I suggest you do a little digging before settling on that one.

    • Just go with a decent Optima 1080p projector. I have this one https://www.amazon.com.au/Optoma-Professional-Technology-Pre…

      • +2

The one you linked is SVGA (800x600). I've seen projectors of this res in action and the fly screen is too visible.

        • Yep my bad, I have the 1080p version that looks the same.

  • Any good for some console level gaming?

    • +3

I've played many lounge coop games on this one and personally haven't had any issues, even with GTA V. From my PC I haven't notice an issue with the refresh rate or input lag on an Xbox wireless controller or substantial motion blur, although, I am sure there is some. Probably not great for competitive gaming, but it's fricken awesome for local coop. Mario kart where your quarter of the screen is bigger than the average TV is so much fun!

      • +1

Thanks, you've given me something to think about.

If anyone wants to play around with a projector for fun without spending $300 this Blitzwolf one's not too bad. Only 720p. It works pretty well when there's not much light and it's fine with a small amount of daylight. The sound is fine, but would be better with speakers.

They're about $110. I also got an inverter from SCA and a cheap eBay screen to play with to watch outside. I've done up to 150"+ and if you're sitting a few metres back it looks fine. It won't play many of my MKVs if I plug my hard drive straight into it, but I can play them through VLC on the Vodafone TV. Any HDMI media device should work fine.

Select AU plug and ships from AU if it's not already selected.

For about $3 more it's probably worth getting the pro which allows you to do wireless screen mirroring, I haven't been able to get it to work with Android (haven't tried very hard), iPad worked fine.

Would recommend if you don't want to spend much and want a decent picture but not amazing.

    • +1

As mentioned in the OP, this one also doesn't have good keystone and can be a bit blurry around the edges as you make it bigger.

  • Anyone have an idea what sort or quality you lose when its ~4m away from the display surface?

    • +1

It's less the quality you lose and more the size of the screen at that distance.

    • Yeah Zondor is right, you won't lose quality but because the screen is getting bigger the pixels will also be getting projected bigger so if you sit too close it can be perceived that he quality is worse. I have my projector around 3.5 meters away from the Walla nf I'm pretty sure the throw I'm getting is just over 100".

  • Any comments if I wanted to use this at night as an outdoor projector for kids sleepovers in the garden like in a 14ft screen or something?
I'm trying to make an outdoor setup not too expensive..but no completely rubbish.

    • I think it'd work very well for this application but it would definitely have to be dark! Or at least the sun dropped below the horizon. The throw can get pretty big, at about 3.5m away from my wall I'm getting just over a 100" screen I believe.

      • Any cheap screen recommendations to go with this?

        • That's a good question, the cost effective option would be a fitted sheet if you already have one.

Otherwise you can get screens on eBay for <$50 but like the sheet, will need a way to be held up as they don't tend to include stands and stuff at that price point.

  • +1

5000 eBay lumens might be a little closer to being accurate.

  • +1

its most probably 500 ANSI lumens, which means it's useless unless you are in a 100% dark room with zero ambient light.

    • +1

Hey, they're getting better, it's apparently the same as the Elephas Q9/Alfawise Q9 and you can find that one advertised as 16000 lumens.

There are lots of video reviews on YouTube (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mNI2CP2kTc), seems like it's pretty good for watching movies with the curtains closed.
