Cast YouTube without “Chromecast with Google TV “ Opening The Corresponding App

I expect that the new Chromecast with Google TV still provides the basic Chromecast functionality, however when I try to cast from my phone it opens the corresponding app first.
e.g. if I try to cast YouTube from the YouTube app on my phone then “Chromecast with Google TV” will open the YouTube app and then attempt to play the content.
The same happens with NetFlix.

Why this is an issue: As we have kids in the house I have set the YouTube app on “Chromecast with Google TV” to block restricted content. If I however try to play restricted content from my phone app and cast to Chromecast with Google TV the app on Chromecast with Google TV will not play the content.
Similar with NetFlix, I have different profiles. When I log into my profile on the phone app and then try to cast, the NetFlix app on Chromecast with Google TV opens and I have to again select and enter the PIN for my profile, then select to cast again.

If I however uninstall the app on Chromecast with Google TV then when I cast it works as expected, i.e. the content just starts playing on Chromecast with Google TV without an app opening.

How can I get Chromecast with Google TV to behave like just a Chromecast device (and not open the corresponding app) when casting from my phone?
And without having to uninstall/disable the corresponding app.

  • Don’t know. Perhaps you’d need to get a previous gen chromecast that doesn’t have this behaviour?

  • Have you tried removing/uninstalling the YouTube app from the GoogleTV?

  • Got an update from Google support, seems like this is the designed behavior, i.e. if the corresponding app is installed on Chromecast TV then Chromecast TV will launch that app to provide a "better user experience". There is no way to tell it not to launch the app and just cast instead.

Of course if the corresponding app is not installed it will just cast like the older Chromecast.

I may just have to keep my old ChromeCast Gen 2 plugged into the other HDMI port for casting.
