Recommended Good Quality Kitchen Knives

Hey OzBargainers,

I'm in the market to pickup some good quality kitchen knives.
Recently went into House and saw the Baccarat Knives but apparently they're not that great in quality. House always has sales so I can't really trust the RRP on their items.

Looking for recommendations on good quality kitchen knives from ozbargainer's experience.
What's everyone's favourite brand?

Thanks in advance for the advice :)

  • Global.

Still using my set since early 2000's.

    Use a Minosharp sharpener .

    • I've heard good things about Global, just never had any experience, thanks I'll check them out!

    • +1 for Global. I still have my set from the mid-2000s. Hand wash only though - when I first got them I was younger and stupid, and put them in the dishwasher (I know!) but a quick visit to the knife shop for a proper sharpen, and they were good as new.

I post this often, but if they are for using rather than display, I think Kiwi knives are the best ones to start with. Easy to sharpen, get very sharp and hold their edges well. Best part is only $7. I have had one for 8 years and have no plans to upgrade. Worth a try, even if just to practice sharpening and knife skills

    • Awesome, I'll check those out, what type of sharper would you recommend, like a stone, steel or those 2/3 step sharpeners?

      • I mainly use a ceramic sharpening stick, but if I want to do a proper job I use the mousepad/sandpaper sharpening method. The minosharps are meant to be pretty good and less trouble

    Victorinox Fibro.

  • Yeah i was the same with Baccarats, looked nice but don't hold their edge very well.

Personally i'd go with Global or Furi if you're getting a kit, else Yaxell, Wusthof or Shun will last for years, and look good.

  • Had one of these from Kmart for a few years.

    It's been good..

20cm Triple Rivet Chef's Knife. Why spend more?

All you need is one decent Santoku for home kitchen use.

  • Baccarat cuisine pro Red utility Knives are really good, $8 each from House, usually behind the counter. The sets are garbage though

  • IKEA Briljera, VG10 seems decent enough and retained sharpness for a while.
My subsequent attempt at sharpening via whetstones hasn't brought it back to that level & longevity of sharp

    What's everyone's favourite brand?

Depends on your budget. My personal favourite brand is German: Zwilling J.A. Henckels. For a more budget friendly option Victorinox Fibrox are great value.

I'm in the market to pickup some good quality kitchen knives.

Consider getting these in your set: These should get you through most situations:
    - Chef's Knife (8” or 10” inch)
    - Paring Knife (3” inch)
    - Long Serrated Bread Knife.
    - Chef's utility knife (4" to 7inch)

Also in my kitchen as with a lot of Asian households have a decent cleaver as well. Also consider learning how to sharpen your knives properly to keep them in tip top condition or get a pro to properly sharpen it for you. I've had my Henckels Pro S chefs knife for a number of years, they will last you many years if properly maintained and cared for - staying super sharp.

  • I bought a 20cm Wusthof knife. Highly recommended and you only need one.
