Recommendations for Smart Home Security Please?

Hi all,

Looking at getting a couple of cameras for security of parcels left at front or back door. Nothing has happened yet, it's just a planned mitigation idea. In the old days I would have just got a swann setup or something but now I have google minis and smart devices all though the house and great wifi with unifi gear so looking at something that will work with google assistant.

How does it all work? Cloud recording? Or can you record locally on to a NAS?

I like to do things on the cheap with mid range products like xiaomi, kogan, good amazon reviewed, etc. Any recommendations please?

  • hi, you can still choose a swann system and have video recorded locally as well as to the cloud. It gives you an option to view on your smartphone and monitor as well.

Unless you definitely want to go wireless, going with a wired system is better as there can be a risk of internet dropout and also you will have to keep on charging the cameras, depends on how good their battery life is. Having said that, Swann also has wireless cameras so worth taking a look there.

Also, the swann systems work with google assistant or alexa and Swann has systems/cameras for different price ranges as well, good to check it out if you haven't already done so.

  • i got this system

very good system and works on wifi or 3g sim card to alert you of a alarm.

  • the cameras are not google the alarm certainly is hooked up to my google system.

  • Even with a ship load of cameras around your house stuff will still get stolen from your front door unfortunately.

If you haven't already and providing there's one near you or your work place, sign up for Parcel Locker with Australia Post (free). I've been using one for a while now and it's great - https://auspost.com.au/receiving/alternative-delivery-addres…

  • Hey OP, what system did you end up buying?

    • I just got two Kogan (tuya) wifi cams with onboard recording.
