Low Cost Roaming Options?

I am setting up a new phone for business. Usually I just buy the coles/boost prepaid options however when international borders open I will at times need to work whilst I am OS. I will need to answer and make small amount of calls and SMS and internet. Does anyone know of any low cost options for this? I estimate it will be 2-3 times max per year that I will be OS. TIA :)

Optus has a decent roaming deal on prepaid

What about buying a Skype phone number and using local sims for data?

I have used Vodafone for years because their $5 per day roaming makes things significantly easier. Full access to your standard plan for this price is great if you will be overseas on a regular basis and you don't have to worry about going over a data limit and being charged exorbitant costs..

It would come down to your specific situation. i.e.
    1. are you going to be in just 1 country all the time, or could you be in a few countries, and if so are these countries in a specific region.
    2. your expected usage - whether its more of sms, calls or internet
    3. how convenient you want the solution to be

Firstly, if you have roaming enabled, you would likely be able to receive SMS for free, although it will cost you to reply by SMS.

So depending on how much you are willing to spend, you can

    1. Switch to a prepaid option that includes some credits for roaming - this is usually sufficient to take some quick calls and/or send some SMS.

    2. Pay for a roaming add on if your plan allows for it

    3. Get a local prepaid SIM card - this is generally the cheapest option for data. You will get a local mobile number, so you won't be able to pick up calls on your Aussie number. But depending on the local prepaid plan, you would probably be able to call back to Australia or SMS with it. Some overseas prepaid plans also have free roaming within specific regions, which is helpful if you are travelling to a few countries.
