Landline and Internet Package for Retirees

Hi all - trying to find a package for the old retiree couple who have to cut over to a NBN line from January. They need the ability to keep their old landline number and to be able to run one or two internet connections, like netflix. Not having much luck finding a bundle package for less than $60 per month.

Any suggestion welcomed

    for the old retiree

Only problem with NBN is the lack of a dedicated phone line, as it is VOIP (phone jacked into the router), if NBN is down or power outage, it can't be used it in those emergencies, so you'll want to think of an alternate device (e.g. a mobile), so it'll be additional cost if they don't have a mobile phone already.

This is an important point. Highly recommended a mobile plan too for any outages.

    • ok the husband has a mobile and uses it ok - the wife wont touch one at all.

      • Well then …. sounds like the wife's problem is solved … no more calls.

Easily the best thing we ever did was to get rid of the landline phone.

You'll have to use VOIP on an NBN line, I'm not sure if it's possible to have both a traditional phone line and an NBN line as well. You can port your number to VOIP and it functions mostly as a traditional phone. It does take some setting up though, I'm with Mate and they don't offer trouble shooting with it. That's fine for someone who's computer literate, but you might need help to set it up.

they have senior plans, im not sure they are advertised. But Nanna just had to cut over to the NBN with no internet in her house, she stayed on a $40 a month local calls plan she was on, and has 12/1 internet in thouse, not that she uses it, but im sure that will be fine for netflix here and there? (She is 93 though)

Ive got my parents on a 4g setup. 100gb on circles life and ported their landline to VOIP. Costs $28 / month for the circles plan and $15 per year for landline rental. It works reasonably well but calls can break up from time to time as its via 4g.

It's such a rip off!!!! I've had to sort this out for older family members that don't need much data. Managed to talk them into getting rid of the home phone and just put them on Belong $10 per month mobile plan. Yes it's still available after the 1st payment date.

Also some are using this Telstra extra small data sim in a usb modem for getting online. It's $15 per month & throttles down to 1.5Mbps after the 5gb is used up every month. So it's basically unlimited.

  • thanks all will review and see where we go.

  • Is there a phone like the older style landline portable phones that work via 4g Sim.
My Old lady hates mobile phones

  • ok went with the aussie broadband, they will be out on the 23rd and do the install. Can confirm the voip transfer will take between 4 to 10 days.
