The bulb isn't bright enough to need to be dimmed. It's 800 lumens or less I think.

    • +1

It's the bottom tier Hue bulb too. It's basically a standard bulb that you can dim. You can't change the hue of the light on the bottom tier bulb, you can only dim it ironically.

what u mean by "Bunnings Collect" ?

    • +1

Bunnings is a large Australian retail chain. You can drive there and buy, or "click and collect", as opposed to waiting for free Amazon delivery.

huh ? u mean i could buy form amazon and pick it up from bunnings ?

        • +5

Probably helps if you stay off the drugs.

Let me know when brighter Hue bulbs come out so I can finally get rid of the remaining LIFX at my place!

    • I’m in the same boat, LIFX has become so touchy this year , so tired of it

      • +1

same! they're only in my loungeroom now, where I like the extra brightness. But they seem to say 'No Response' more often than not recently. Have had to get out of bed and go back downstairs to turn them off manually twice in the past 2 weeks.

….and for those who don't use smartbulbs, I know this sounds like a trivial complaint but these things are not cheap and you expect them to work consistently, as the Hue bulbs do.

    • The 1600 lumen ones? I have not seen them yet. I just have fixtures that take two bulbs.

Ikea have some 1000 lumen Zigbee bulbs for $9, if that helps. Or you get a 35W driver, and run a few metres of 24V strip-lights:

      https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/tradfri-driver-for-wireless-con…

If money is no object, get the Hue ceiling lights, e.g.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Philips-Hue-ambiance-Compatible-As…?

      • have heard varying level sof satisfaction with ikea bulbs.

I'm completely happy with my Hue setup…just wish the bulbs would go a bit brighter at max setting.

I've considered the hue ceiling lights but they're too exxy + design wouldn't fit in at my place…plus i'd rather just wait until Hue comes out with a brighter bulb.

        • I have both, and for warm white they are very similar. On the "ambiance", Hue has a broader colour range, if that matters. But all are good.

I hear the full-colour lamps are quite different in gamut.

To double your brightness to 1600 lumen, get this: :)

          • @bargaino: Going off the images, it looks like two bayonet fittings into one edison - is that right?

            • @KangaDrew: No. You may wish to update your optical prescription :)

But it was not an entirely serious suggestion.

              • @bargaino: that gadget looks like a fire waiting to happen.

But adding floor lamps is definitely an option for improving brightness via multiple bulbs, it just means it's not as neat a solution (takes up more physical space, would need to set lights up as a group etc) and it'd cost more overall.

  • Anyone knows if the tradfri dimmer works as well as the hue dimmer?

    • +2

Yes, Tradfri dimmer works directly with Hue bulbs, but cannot be programmed with Hue bridge.

I even have lights that are controlled by both Hue and Tradfri dimmers in different places.
For best value, I suggest Hue Bridge and dimmers, with Tradfri lights.

      • It works directly with the bulb? even if I don't have the latest hue bulb with bluetooth? Does it require a sort of tradfri hub?

        Thanks for your insight!

        • +1

Yes, you can pair the ikea dimmer direct to the bulbs. They use Zigbee, no hub needed.
(if your Hue bulbs are especially ancient, they may need a firmware update?)

But if you do use a hub, you need to pair the ikea dimmer to hub first (Hue or Ikea, or other), and then to the lights.

I have exactly this … Hue Bridge, Dimmer, Sensor and Trafri lights.

After 1 year with the IKEA Bridge I was so frustrated and connected the lights to a Hue Bridge. Since then they work perfectly. Can change the white ambience, dimming and work fine with the Hue dimmer switch and sensor. Can't speak about colour.

The only thing what does not work is updating the firmware of the lights. Also HomeKit would then not work for the Trafri lights when connected to the Hue Bridge. For these things to work you would need to connect them to the Ikea bridge. But when they are running fine there should be no need for this. I updated them to the latest version with the Ikea Bridge and then connected them to the Hue Bridge.

The Tradfri dimmer and sensor are in my opinion useless as it connects to the lights and not to the bridge. I like the Hue Dimmer switch as this is changeable via the app.

        • Also HomeKit would then not work for the Trafri lights when connected to the Hue Bridge.

Use Homebridge to connect Trafri lights to Homekit via Hue. It is simple and easy, but needs an always-on server. Raspberry Pi is one way.

The Tradfri dimmer and sensor are in my opinion useless as it connects to the lights and not to the bridge.

I returned my Ikea Bridge after discovering this! However, a Samsung Smartthings Hub (now discontinued) is able to do what you want with the Tradfri dimmer and sensor. (except using the cloud)
