  • OP, in all seriousness, it's supply and demand. Have you asked around local dealers for a price, or hit them up with offers? There's not heaps on ground now, especially with the plate clearance sale (which takes off about $5k).

    • Yeah. Local dealer $65,400. That’s with premium paint, SR5+ premium interior, black alloy upgrade, ute liner, tow bar.

Needs to be below $60k for me to bite. Wondering if anyone has got close or less if possible? If demand is greater than supply I’ll wait. Would likely be equally as happy with other brands as well (Ranger Wildtrak, new Isuzu, etc).

        Why exactly?

If you're not set on the model, then you shouldn't even be talking best price. They aren't the same ute and each have their advantages and disadvantages.

          Why exactly?

Because I believe that brings it into line with other brands and the features on offer (or the features missing).

If you're not set on the model, then you shouldn't even be talking best price.

Sorry, I don’t get that logic. Even if I was “set” on it why wouldn’t I want the best price? Would you pay full price for a particular item just because you were “set” on it? I believe you would shop around.

I need a dual cab ute with a decent interior, at least 2 tonne towing, some decent safety features, be able to fill it up with camping stuff, be an ok drive on the road and decent off-road - mainly pulling the boat out from beach launch, etc. There’s more than a couple of utes that can do that and I would be equally happy in either.

          • @herbo: Have you hit up the other brands/dealers for prices of equivalent models?

            • @Deuce: Awaiting a quote for Ford Ranger. Have seen reports on ranger owners facebook of $63 for Wildtrak. Before anyone comments, I know it’s the internet someone said, etc, etc.

I'm yet to sit in 2 different cars/vehicles, of different make and model, and not form an opinion of which is best suited, be it comfort/safety/power/features/servicing/resale/reliability. I'm surprised you can class all 3 as so close that it comes down to price.

There’s more than a couple of utes that can do that and I would be equally happy in either.

So go for the cheapest?! Don't expect Toyota just to drop to $60k 'because that's what you want', it doesn't work that way, there's still set margins. There's a multitude of reasons that another ute could be cheaper, so go for what you believe to be the best value for money.

Even in the 3 you've listed, Hilux and D-Max are newer, safer models compared to the Ranger. All 3 have varying resale, service costs, feature sets and warranties. If all 3 tick the boxes for you, and you believe the comfort of all 3 are the same, then go for what's cheapest.

If the Hilux, with your list of accessories (why you'd prioritise black wheels, which will put the price up compared to the competition, I don't know), is more expensive than a competitor ute, then guess what? Go buy the cheaper one.

Because I believe that brings it into line with other brands and the features on offer (or the features missing).

            Side note, it doesn't.

            • @spackbace: How do you figure an SR5 is safer than a XLT Ranger?

In hindsight, and to save you some words, I probably should have phrased this forum post “Do you think it’s possible or has anyone recently purchased a Hilux SR5 with leather and tow bar for around $60k? Yes or no”.

Then go with normal paint, get the wheels later on, normal interior RRP on that will be squillions - when it really costs then only a few hunge.

        • I think normal paint is white only, which I don’t mind, but I think the saving for that is only $600. Could minus the other things but then I believe it’s not up to the same spec as competitors in that price range.

          • @herbo: You're prepared to pay extra for black wheels just to match like for like?

            Lol

            • @spackbace: I remember when i traded in my civic for my Hilux, the sales rep basically pointed out everything that was wrong with my civic and why it was a mistake. Black car, factory optioned black wheels etc. I learnt my lesson after that car.

              • @Deuce: To put it in perspective, the black wheels have a sale price in my system of $1760 inc GST

That's keeping the factory tyres, just purely paying $1760 to change colour/design

                • @spackbace: I brought that civic 2 months after it was released and the black wheels on those was $1700 inc GST and new tyres (factory size to upgraded size was different). Man I was so dumb and naive then. That car was my biggest regret purchase. Mind you this Hilux Ive spent more money on it than that civic.

                  • @Deuce: Hey look, if it's in the budget then by all means make a car your own and customise it, just don't expect to get it back on resale.

But to potentially price a car up that it ends up too expensive compared to a competitor car, just because of a silly cosmetic feature, and potentially rule that car out as a result is just silly.

                    • +1

@spackbace: That's true and when I got my Hilux quote, the sales rep actually asked me what my main purpose for the car was etc and why I needed it and what not to get etc. He never up sold me on wheels, bars and other accessories. I just brought stock Hilux and made minor mods in terms of storage/engine , compared to Honda, played on my emotions basically.

            • @spackbace: Alright I’m regretting including the wheels now, so this thread was at least useful in that regard.

I test drove one and it was black with the black wheels. I just asked for a quote for the same vehicle.

              • +2

@herbo: The price you've got is good. Drop the wheels and the price attached and that's likely the best you'll get.

I'd recommend a spray-on tub liner and not the plastic one

                • @spackbace: Appreciate the advice. Do you think there's any chance of a price drop in the new year when the instant asset write-off thing ends?

                  • @herbo: Hard to say tbh, Toyota do weird things with the Hilux because they want it to be #1

      • I paid around 58k for a new extra cab SR5 in November. Auto plus towbar fitted otherwise stock standard.
Nice car; did not consider the Isuzu because apparently can not fit a tray. Liked the Ranger but decided to stick with Toyota.

        • So OP's discount is around a $7,400 off my (WA) price (with higher stamp duty), and yours is much the same… Yet OP wants another $5k off ;)

          • +2

@spackbace: He can get 5k off, just drop it down to SR

    • which takes off about $5k

Is that absorbed by the dealer or Toyota or both?

  • I was too poor to even negotiate, they gave me $4 to leave

  • Saved $1,000s by not buying

  • Contact a broker, they will DEFINITELY get you a price lower than what you’ve found so far.

Previously I had priced an Amarok at around 72k, including all extras I had requested they were going to do it sight unseen, never enter a dealership and it arrives at my house brand new on the back of a truck all for 62k… I couldn’t believe the difference they were prepared to discount given it was just a number to them and perhaps they were short on sales that month, but let’s be honest, at that price they’re still making money.
