[NSW] Free Range Eggs, Dozen 600g $1.64 (Was $4.10), BB 9/12 @ Coles Warringah Mall

410

Cheap protein! I'm going to be eating omelettes for a while.

I asked the checkout chick if these would be sold tomorrow but she didn't know. The date is Best Before rather than Use By. From my past experience, these are fine for a week longer in the fridge but YMMV.

That would be a fun drive home :)

    Hard boiled eggs!!! Yummo!

Deviled taste best with Hellman's mayo, S&P, + paprika. For the bolder of you, fine-diced sweet gherkins are amazing in them.

    Bon Apetit!

Bb date has been reached, and these are not in the fridge while at the supermarket. (Picture shows that)

    Yuck!

    Some bargain’s aren’t worth the risk…

    Most likely OzBargained before hand!!!!!

Someone quickly let " HOW TO BASIC" Know XD

    • He lives in WA so bit far to get the eggs

  • My Coles only very recently started to refrigerate their eggs. Before that, they were just on a shelf in a random aisle.

    • Yep, this Coles was a non-refrigerator. They have recently refurbished and I have to admit I haven't purchased eggs there since, so I'm not sure about these ones.

I've had eggs over a year past it's best before date. Looked the same, tastes the same, I'm still here!

  • OP, does Coles Warringah Mall refrigerate their eggs since the refurbishment, or have these likely been sitting at room temperature for a while?

    • These felt cold when I bought them last night. Could've been moved out of cold storage.

I don't shop there regularly, but IIRC there was refrigerated shelving just to the right of the photo with most of their stock of eggs.

As mentioned "best before" is not "use by". The producers will also be allowing a safe margin for the consumption of the eggs. They have to be mindful that not all customers will store the eggs in the optimum conditions, such as leaving them in the warmth of the kitchen and not refrigerating them. Would be great for hard boiling and peeling, in fact this is preferable to fresh eggs as they will be very difficult to peel and result in a lot of the egg being removed with the shell.
In an ideal world, which is difficult to find, the best temperature for egg storage is in fact 10 c. Fridges are recommeneded as a better option to excessive heat, but be mindful eggs will sweat (condensation) if brought back to room temperature and then back into the fridge, which isn't ideal.
